Welcome Antonia Nebo (PhD) as Assistant Director, Administrative Services – Women in Mining Africa (WiM-Africa) Secretariat Antonia brings over a decade of experience in public health, environmental management, and strategic administrative #leadership to her role as Assistant Director, Administrative Services at the WiM-Africa #Secretariat. Having served as a dedicated volunteer with WiM-Africa for over a year, Antonia has demonstrated exceptional commitment to advancing the organization’s mission of empowering #women in mining, fostering gender inclusivity, and promoting #sustainable mining practices across Africa. She currently works on African Development Bank Group (AfDB), IFC - International Finance Corporation (IFC), and other development bank projects across #Africa, ensuring #compliance with Environmental and Social #Safeguards (ESS) standards for #investment projects in the mining sector. Her expertise in program management, policy #implementation, and cross-sectoral #collaboration positions her as a key contributor to WiM-Africa’s administrative and operational #excellence. With a background spanning academia, research, and project execution, Antonia excels in data-driven decision-making, strategic planning, and stakeholder #engagement. She has been instrumental in driving impactful #initiatives, managing multidisciplinary teams, and overseeing complex projects. Her passion for fostering women’s #leadership aligns seamlessly with WiM-Africa’s vision to create a transformative environment for women in the #mining sector, empowering them to thrive professionally and contribute meaningfully to their communities. In May 2023 we had over 2,300 mining community members receive capacity-building training. Women and youth from Chunya, Winza, Lindi, Kahama, and Shinyanga showcased their mineral produce and gained market exposure. We also had Financial literacy training by CRDB Bank Plc, an artisanal mining services overview by STAMICO Tanzania, and a session on the importance of geological data by the Geological Survey of Tanzania. The Deputy Minister of Mines, Dr. Steven Kiruswa attended and endorsed the program. It's one of the impactful moments that we reflect at the end of the year as say we're grateful for the partners, government, and everyone who made it possible. #twimmi #WomeninMining #WomeninMineralValueAddition

Mrs. Kanayo Awani, Executive Vice President of Intra-African Trade and Export Development, delivered an inspiring speech highlighting the importance of women’s contributions to the economy. She also accepted the African Women’s Economic Empowerment Award on behalf of President Benedict Oramah. We have together, created a thriving, pan-African community committed to sustainable and inclusive growth in the mining sector. 2024 Highlights ✨ ✍🏽✍🏽 This year has been transformative, marked by remarkable milestones, including: 👉🏾 Successfully hosted three impactful events, including the #Grants and #Loans Readiness Workshop (Investment readiness) for Artisanal Women Miners across the continent. 👉🏾 Growing our network to over 130 implementing partners, over 600 pan-African volunteers and over 300 members across the continent. 👉🏾 Celebrating our Executive Director’s inclusion in the prestigious #WiM100 Recognition, showcasing African #excellence on the global stage. 👉🏾 Engaging 115 African #universities to promote scholarships for girls in #mining-related disciplines. 👉🏾 Addressing critical issues such as the Comfort Ezekiel Case, where WiM-Africa fully covered the #scholarship school fees for the young accident victim whose arm was amputated, reaffirming our commitment to education and empowerment. 👉🏾 Forging significant partnerships with organizations such as IRMA Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance , Resource for Africa and other key stakeholders. 👉🏾 Advancing #gender #equity through policy engagements and dialogues across the continent. 👉🏾 Launching and commencing the “Voices of Children from the Pits” (VoC) Program, focused on removing #children from hazardous #mines and offering them a brighter future. 👉🏾 Participating in the HerAFCFTA initiative, empowering women in mining to leverage opportunities within the African Continental Free Trade Area (#AFCFTA) for sustainable growth and cross-border #trade. 👉🏾 Successfully appointed five new board members this year, strengthening our #leadership team to drive impactful #initiatives across the continent. 👉🏾 Our Executive Director had the privilege of participating in the #Cornwall tour of #mineral processing facilities etc, gaining invaluable insights into advanced mining practices and enhancing our commitment to fostering knowledge transfer and empowering our members with innovative solutions. This video underscores the critical message championed by WiM-Africa. Poverty, weak regulatory oversight, and systemic neglect have driven these children to the mines, sourcing lithium materials that fuel global markets for phones and electric vehicles. Yet, their communities remain trapped in poverty. “Government oversight is minimal, exploitation is plentiful” The root cause of child labor in mining is deeply rooted in child poverty, particularly in Nigeria. At Women in Mining Africa (WiM-Africa) we are conducting studies to uncover the statistics of children involved in mining and to develop actionable pathways for intervention. Solving this socio-economic crisis demands collective effort and unwavering commitment. Policies exist, but their implementation must be backed by firm dedication to change.
