I got asked to write another POV about Super Bowl advertising. “The revolution will be televised.” I watched it before my eyes on Sunday. I didn’t understand it all. I wasn’t meant to understand it all. It wasn’t meant for me. Our industry continues to write endless analyses of Super Bowl advertising, parsing it on panels, accusing it of idea-theft, admonishing it for wasting the client’s money, or worse, having the gall to bore us. We still so desperately want advertising to drive culture as it once did, when a single ad seemed to *mean* something important. Goddamn, we want things to *mean* something. And then came Kendrick Lamar’s halftime performance. The revolution will be televised. If you want to dissect a nuanced, layered, coded, goddamned audacious piece of performance art, for a brand called the future of our country, look no further. Spend a minute. Be willing to not understand. Be willing to learn.
