We support our hospitals, our NHS colleagues, our patients and our researchers.

About us

The Royal Free Charity is the charity NHS charity partner for the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust and North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust. We support our NHS colleagues, patients and our researchers at Barnet, Chase Farm, North Mid and the Royal Free hospitals. From small acts of kindness to huge investments in discovery and innovation, everything we do changes lives for the better. Our extraordinary volunteers enrich the experience of patients and the support they provide to NHS staff is transformational. We’re there when patients need us, thanks to the services we provide. And the grants that we make help our hospitals to accelerate vital medical research and invest in innovations to help patients and staff. All this is made possible by the generosity of our supporters who help our hospitals go further and faster than the NHS could do alone.

  • People living with #HIV are reducing their risk of falls thanks to a project we’ve funded for the Royal Free London’s Ian Charleson Day Centre (ICDC). The uses a digital screening tool to determine their range of mobility and fall risk. This means improving referrals for the ICDC frailty service and overall long-term health outcomes for people living with HIV. Jessica Pinto, nurse practitioner, said: “It's something that takes a minute and it makes a whole difference. It's very straightforward, and the results are also very clear and easy to understand.” Dr Howell Jones said: “The earlier that we introduce interventions for frailty, the better chance that we're going to improve quality of life, reverse frailty and reduce falls, hospital admissions, length of stay and mortality.” As a result of the screening, the ICDC has doubled the number of frailty clinics offered from once to twice a month. The service has also seen a significant drop in the numbers of patients not showing up for their appointments. 🗞️ Head to https://lnkd.in/e3vuzntG to donate or find out more about the mobility testing device that is helping people living with HIV. #RoyalFreeCharity #WorldAIDSDay2024 #StopHIVTogether #ICDC Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust

  • “Patients lighten up when Teddy visits and because his affection is unconditional, everyone who pets him or watches feels better for it.” Our therapy dog Teddy provides emotional support to people visiting the Royal Free London’s Ian Charleson Day Centre. Teddy and owner Jill visit the centre - which offers world class care for those living with #HIV - every week. Tom Fernandez, nurse practitioner, said: “HIV is still a stigmatised condition and many of our patients experience low self-esteem, shame and isolation. Having the therapy dogs visit is such an icebreaker in the waiting room. Patients lighten up when Teddy visits and because his affection is unconditional everyone who pets him or watches feels better for it.” “The clinical team love the visits as they offers a few moments of pleasure in what is an otherwise busy day. The therapy dogs help de-stress, offer a communal happy experience and allow for therapeutic touch, all of which are invaluable but all in the most natural and playful way.” #RoyalFreeCharity #WorldAIDSDay2024 #ICDC #StopHIVTogether Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust

  • We’re marking World AIDS Day with a series of stories to show how our supporters’ donations make a difference to people at the Royal Free London’s Ian Charleson Day Centre which offers world class care for those living with HIV. In the UK, more than 105,000 people are living with HIV. Medical advances mean they can live a long and healthy life, but the condition is misunderstood by many. Dr Linda Vaccari spoke to us about her charity-funded training sessions for NHS staff to reduce the stigma attached to the condition. She said: “HIV is now a chronic infection that is very manageable, and people have a normal life expectancy if it’s diagnosed early, so we should reduce the stigma by increasing the level of knowledge and the empowerment that staff feel about supporting their patients who are living HIV. “It was really amazing that the charity supported this work, and it has been really crucial because it's allowed us to deploy a training programme that's specifically dedicated for staff.” 🗞️ Read more: https://lnkd.in/eyWrwNi8 #RoyalFreeCharity #WorldAIDSDay2024 #StopHIVTogether #ICDC Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust

  • “I’ve always been a solo runner but there’s something special about running with others for a shared cause. You’re raising funds for charity and that feels really good.” Jeremy, an osteopath at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, is preparing to take part in the annual Red Run fundraising event for the second time this year to raise awareness and funds for HIV and AIDS.   Jeremy is running for the Royal Free Charity to support the Ian Charleson Day Centre at the Royal Free Hospital, which provides world-class care for those living with HIV and AIDS. The event is especially meaningful for him, as he has firsthand experiences of the HIV and AIDS epidemic. Growing up in New York in the 1980s, he witnessed the devastation of HIV as it ravaged communities and stigmatised the LGBTQ+ population. As World AIDS Day approaches on 1 December, it’s a reminder of the ongoing need for awareness and support. The Red Run is more than just a race, it’s a chance to come together, celebrate the LGBTQ+ community, and continue the fight for HIV awareness and support. 📰 Read more: https://lnkd.in/eg4nNXsh #HIVAwareness #AIDSAwareness #WorldAIDSDay #RedRun #LGBTQ

  • £16 can fund an hour of welfare rights advice which provides vulnerable patients, including those in palliative care, with support in navigating financial and social care issues.    Rebecca, specialist palliative care nurse, said: “The support hub has been really useful for patients with chronic illnesses.   “Without the charity’s support the patient experience becomes very medicalised - which does have its place - but there’s a noticeable impact with the charity’s extra support services.    “It’s really important to be able to boost people and reduce their anxiety.”   The service can only operate with your help. Please donate to our winter fundraising appeal at https://lnkd.in/evFSf639 to ensure our services can continue.   #RoyalFreeCharity #NHS #fundraising #welfarerights
