We've helped to complete the latest phase of an innovative £900,000 project to limit heavy metals polluting rivers in Upper Teesdale. The creation of more than 3 hectares of vegetation plots above Middleton-in-Teesdale will limit heavy metals being washed out of abandoned mine sites next to Great Eggleshope Beck, Little Eggleshope Beck and Marl Beck – all tributaries of the River Tees. By encouraging new plants to grow, less rain water will wash over or filter into the mine waste, reducing erosion and the amount of heavy metals washed into the becks. The work was delivered as part of the North Pennines National Landscape, Tees-Swale: naturally connected programme, which aims to restore, expand and connect habitats and is funded primarily through The National Lottery Heritage Fund. This project to limit metals polluting rivers was led by the Yorkshire Dales Rivers Trust and the Water and Abandoned Metal Mines (WAMM) programme, working with the Tees Rivers Trust. It is primarily funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) through the WAMM programme, a partnership with the Environment Agency and the Mining Remediation Authority. Exciting funding opportunity! Stronger Shores are delighted to launch our new community grant scheme. This scheme aims to support a broad range of projects that are community led and support the Stronger Shores mission of understanding how natural marine habitats can protect our coastline. We want communities and people to be part of this by building understanding of underwater habitats (seagrass, kelp, and native oysters), how the coastline is changing with the climate crisis, and what action individuals and groups can take to help protect the marine and coastal environment. Grants between £500-£5000 can be applied for to support projects in the following areas: Northumberland, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Sunderland, Durham, Hartlepool and Redcar and Cleveland. We will be accepting applications from Monday 11th November 2024 (today!) until Monday 13th January 2025. 🌿 Exciting Progress at Billingham Beck Country Park! 🌿 Following the successful completion of the construction phase of the Billingham Beck River Restoration Project, it's inspiring to witness the remarkable transformation underway. Together with our delivery partner Tees Rivers Trust we are enhancing the park for both visitors and wildlife with substantial upgrades, including: - Improved drainage systems - Newly installed pathways and stairs - Replaced benches - Installed kissing gates - Replaced fencing - The planting of 5,000 trees to enrich the local ecosystem A huge thanks to everyone contributing to this transformative project! Our lovely client Stronger Shores has launched a community grants scheme to award £500-£5000 to groups for projects that will make a positive difference to the marine environment in the North East of England. Stronger Shores is a project covering the coastline from Northumberland to Redcar and Cleveland. It is learning how underwater habitats such as seagrass meadows, kelp forests and native oyster reefs can naturally protect out coastlines from erosion and flooding, improve water quality and create habitat for wildlife. Community groups can apply for a grant until 13th January 2025.
