What does effective leadership look like in movements for change? In Leadership in the End Times, Roger Hallam reflects on lessons from Extinction Rebellion and Just Stop Oil, challenging the ideal of “leaderlessness” in activism. Drawing on insights from journalist Chris Hedges and his own experiences, Hallam critiques the “tyranny of structurelessness” and calls for a new, values-driven approach to power, centred on love, trust, and respect. At stake: the future of democracy, justice, and climate action in the face of rising authoritarianism. 🙏 Prayers for the People of #Valencia. #Stopclimatechaos. A personal reflection: In 1996 I had the pleasure of meeting long time #ecowarrior #climateactivist Edward Goldsmith, founder of The Ecologist magazine, author of "The Great U-Turn: De-Industrialising Society" - I have held onto my signed copy for posterity, as he was a person of vision. Back then, digital files were not as commonplace, so I sat attentively in his Richmond, UK, offices surrounded by endless shelves packed with paper files of the environmental research he had done - he indicated numerous academic papers from Harvard University amongst other notable sources. He was very well-connected. "Teddy", lifetime member of the #GreenParty (for which I was volunteering at the time) had dedicated most of his life to the #environment, #climate direct action, and raising the alarm on #globalwarming which he believed would cause #extremeweather events, species #extinction, warming of #oceans leading to collapse of #ecosystems, spreading of disease, mass #migration as areas became uninhabitable... What sticks in my mind relating to the #floods in #Spain, is his description of some regions becoming so parched, with soil hardened through #drought, that when excessive rainfall were then to occur, the ground would not absorb it, leading to the appalling outcome we have seen in #Valencia. Extraordinarily, just as I got up to make my way home, a massive thunderstorm broke out with thunder, fork lightning and torrential rain! I took this as a sign. Teddy Goldsmith inspired me to work in clean energy, and I went on to dedicate my career to the promotion of #fuelcells and the #zeroemission #fuel #hydrogen. I just wish people had listened to us all nearly 30 years ago. But it is not too late. Let's campaign, every day, for a rapid phase-out of #fossilfuels. #netzero #hydrogennow #hydrogeneconomy #savetheearth #saveourseas. This is just a glimpse of what’s to come. Spain's southeastern regions, including Valencia and Letur, have been devastated by floods, with at least 72 feared dead – and more missing. Streets turned into rivers, buildings submerged, cars swept away – this isn’t just “bad weather”... it’s climate breakdown, and it’s on our doorstep. As one resident put it, "We were trapped like rats" – caught in a world where our leaders’ inaction traps us all. This crisis isn’t just an isolated catastrophe, it’s a pattern of destruction that we are failing to curb. If we don’t act now, it won’t be the exception – it will be the rule. Climate change is relentless, and the cost of ignoring it is right here, in lives lost and homes destroyed. The clock is ticking . . . Photo credits: Guardian / Getty Images

How did we end up here? With #Trump back in office, Dr Jason Hickel argues in the latest article from The Ecologist that it’s not just about flawed candidates or campaign mistakes—the root issue runs deeper, straight into the heart of liberal #politics. The #Democrats’ struggle isn’t simply bad strategy; it’s the failure of an entire ideology that no longer resonates with people’s real needs. ‘#Liberalism has failed’, unwilling to take bold steps on issues like public #healthcare, #housing, and the #green transition because they threaten the interests of the wealthy elite. The result? An opening for #RightWing populism to take the stage, exploiting the lack of genuine change for working people. 🔗 Read the full story> https://lnkd.in/eRhy4ymX #TheEcologist #USPolitics #USElection2024 #DonaldTrump #DemocraticParty #Liberalism #ProgressivePolitics #Socialism #GlobalInequality #EcologicalCrisis #PoliticalEconomy #CapitalismCritique #EconomicJustice #GreenTransition #EnvironmentalJustice

Our latest article from former Vice Chair of the RSPCA, Jane Tredgett, is a powerful exploration of her shift from animal welfare to full animal rights advocacy. Reflecting on her journey as a former RSPCA trustee in light of undercover footage surfacing from an Animal Rising investigation, Jane explores how her involvement with both the RSPCA and Animal Rebellion highlights a deep disillusionment with welfare reforms, which she argues merely normalise animal exploitation. After stepping down from the RSPCA following her activism with Animal Rebellion, Tredgett’s commitment to ending all forms of speciesism and exploitation becomes clear. “A cage is a cage,” she writes, emphasising that true change lies in recognising animals’ right to live free from human use—not just improving their living conditions. 🔗 Read more > https://lnkd.in/gkk32QWd 📸: @animaljusticeproject #AnimalRights #Veganism #TheEcologist #RSPCA #AnimalRebellion #JaneTredgett #PETA

The battle for the right to #WildCamp on #Dartmoor has reached boiling point as landowner Alexander Darwall is challenging the Court of Appeal’s ruling, which upheld the public’s right to camp in the national park. The Dartmoor National Park Authority, The Stars Are For Everyone campaign group, The Dartmoor Preservation Association, and The Open Spaces Society are all fighting to protect these long-standing freedoms, now at risk of being restricted. Darwall argues that wild camping harms #livestock and Dartmoor’s fragile #ecosystem, but supporters of the #RightToRoam insist that this ruling could set a dangerous precedent for public access to nature across the UK. 🌱 This is a pivotal moment for the future of outdoor recreation and our connection with #nature. 🔗 Visit for a breakdown of the legal battle> https://lnkd.in/eiTks7Kd. Public trust in the RSPCA is rapidly declining after disturbing undercover footage surfaced, revealing animal cruelty on RSPCA Assured #farms. This footage, part of an investigation by Animal Rising, showcases shocking conditions where animals suffer from neglect and inhumane treatment. In response, the For Charlie #Campaign conducted a survey indicating that a significant portion of the public believes the RSPCA Assured scheme contradicts the organisation’s mission to prevent animal suffering. An open letter signed by celebrities including Joanna Lumley, Moby, Bryan Adams, and Will Young, along with 60 #animalwelfare organisations, urges the #RSPCA to abandon the Assured scheme and instead promote a kinder, #plantbased based future. ‘After the hottest summer on record, go online and you’ll be barraged by adverts for heavily climate-polluting products and services – from flights to fast fashion, SUVs and meaty, fast, junk food.’ In their eye-opening article, Andrew Simms of the New Weather Institute and Leo Murray from the climate action charity Possible explore the overwhelming impact of advertising on our lives and the #environment. With individuals facing exposure to thousands of ads daily, the authors of Badvertising reveal how this barrage of messaging shapes our consumption behaviors and mental health. They highlight groundbreaking initiatives, such as The Hague’s ban on high-carbon #advertising, which aims to reduce visual #pollution and protect future generations. This insightful piece challenges us to reconsider our relationship with #advertising and its role in the climate crisis. 🚱 The Iberian Peninsula is facing a strong water crisis. Both Spain and Portugal are exposed to extreme droughts, leading to a critical water shortage that threatens agriculture and local ecosystems. A battle over resources is intensifying, driven by growing demands. 🧑🏾🌾 This situation has triggered tensions between Spanish and Portuguese farmers as they need to rely on dwindling water supplies from shared rivers like the Guardiana. While Spain pushes for more extensive irrigation to sustain its thirsty crops, Portuguese farmers worry about the ecological toll and competition for what’s left of the water supply, sparking both environmental and political conflicts that could reshape agriculture across the region. 🧐 Beyond the immediate scarcity, the investigation by Luzia Lambuça michele curel Daniel Moura Borges and Emerson Mendoza Ayala explores deeper issues, including the heavy reliance on water-intensive crops like avocados and oranges, whose cultivation is exacerbating the crisis. Experts argue that the region’s agricultural model is unsustainable, and highlight how mismanaged water pricing and lack of international cooperation are further exacerbating the problem. ➡️ Find more information about this investigation and the links to all the articles: https://lnkd.in/ecM3vi66 The Ecologist Público #earthinvestigations #waterscarcity Arcadia
