Developing pathways and generating opportunities for more diversity and inclusion in sailing, leading with gender.
About us
Our Mission is “Accelerating women to the top of sailing” The Magenta Project is a collective of passionate sailors committed to creating equal access and opportunities for women in sailing and to working with a wide range of individuals and organisations to make that happen. It was started in 2015 by members of the all female ‘Team SCA’ who successfully competed in the 2014-15 Volvo Ocean Race campaign. We are a UK registered charity, no. 1180719. We deliver our mission by: -Upskilling female sailors to enable them to reach the top of their sport; -Inspiring generations of female racing sailors; and -Driving change in the sailing industry Our vision is “To be the worldwide organisation that enables women to have equal access and opportunities in the sport of sailing”. Our core activities include: 1. Enabling opportunities for women in sailing through on water training, learning and development opportunities e.g. foiling clinics, race boat experience. We also support career/skills development schemes and events and STEM activities in the marine industry 2. Building networks and relationships that connect individuals and organisations and enable sailing knowledge, experience and opportunities to be shared 3. Raising awareness of women in sailing and celebrating their successes and achievements. We also illustrate the need for change in sailing, provide solutions and share evidence of what works, influence/advise on policy and offer support to event and race organisers to introduce change initiatives. We encourage all our supporters and everyone in the sailing industry to join with us to make sailing a fully equal sport by having mixed gender crews; providing equal access and opportunities for women within professional sailing and as they learn and progress through the sport; sharing knowledge, skills and experience with female sailors and helping to support and fund the work that we do.

The bustling halls of Amsterdam’s METSTRADE and the thought-provoking panels of the Yacht Racing Forum painted a vivid picture of the marine industry’s future this year. For members of The Magenta Project, these events were more than networking opportunities; they were arenas to inspire, interact, and gain valuable insights to drive meaningful change. TMP mentees, alumni, and mentors, including Madeleine Lithvall, Emilia Vaes, Carlota Alonso, Aina Bauza, and Emma York, each brought their unique perspectives to the table, proving that women have an indelible role in navigating the future of sailing. More reflections from one of our Magenta mentees, Madeleine Lithvall, from her final day at METSTRADE ⬇️
Creative Consultant | Master's student at POLIMI Graduate School of Management | Shaping narratives that resonate within the lifestyle, sports fashion and beauty sectors
INSPIRATION, INSIGHTS & INTERACTIONS: Reflections on Day 2 at METSTRADE My second & last day at METSTRADE with The Magenta Project was packed with energy, thought-provoking conversations & new perspectives on the intersection of sailing, storytelling & value creation. 🌅 Morning Highlights The day started with an exploration of the fair, exchanging interesting conversations with exhibitors. The highlight? Trying out the America's Cup simulator! Now I fully understand how addictive AC racing must be — such a rush! 🌊 Afternoon at the Yacht Racing Forum The sessions, exploring strategy, marketing & storytelling in sail racing, were incredibly relevant to my personal interests & passions. 🔹 World Sailing’s Strategy for the Future: The purpose to inspire, empower & grow vibrant sailing communities resonated deeply. I immediately started strategising: How would I leverage my PR & media expertise to elevate sailing’s visibility & make it more relatable to those outside the “community”? 🔹 The Role of Private Owners in Sport Development: The balance between fair competition, exceptional sailing & memorable experiences struck me. It made me think about the mutual chain of value in sailing, driven by passion: Crew members bring value to owners – owners bring value by raising awareness for heartfelt (e.g environmental, ethical) causes – racing organisations connect competitors, spectators & sponsors – sponsors provide value to their customers... Recognising how we contribute to this chain is key to staying authentic & achieving both personal & industry-wide goals. 🔹 Optimising Sponsor Engagement & ROI: The discussion around aligning sponsorship with values & purpose particularly resonated. How do we craft storytelling that reflects the passions of sponsors and spectators alike? Successful sponsorships are built on authenticity, purpose & connection, which is a perspective I bring into my work. 🔹 Maximising PR & Marketing Budgets: One of the most impactful conversations for me was about using digital & experiential tools to share sailing stories with a human touch. I’ve always believed in the power of storytelling to create authentic connections. Hearing this reinforced my belief that storytelling is key to creating value in sailing. These discussions sparked further reflections for me; As consumers increasingly seek value in form of experiences rather than just purchases & price value – and more organisations tap into this trend, how can sailing evolve its marketing to be more active, engaging & emotionally impactful? Are we doing enough to make sailing an experience that spectators feel personally connected to? If not, how can we “take people out sailing” even when they’re halfway around the world? My 2 days at METSTRADE left me inspired, motivated & more certain of where I want to contribute to the growth of sailing. Thank you Emma York for encouraging me to go. #metstrade #themagentaproject #yachtracingforum #sailracing #sportsmarketing

Great recap of METSTRADE & Yacht Racing Forum Day 1 from one of our Management & Media Pathway mentees, Madeleine Lithvall ⬇️ What were your key takeaways? Love the insights from Women In The Marine Industry International panel, as well as hearing about new innovations in our sport!

INSPIRATION, INSIGHTS & INTERACTIONS Reflections on two days at METSTRADE with The Magenta Project in Amsterdam, day 1 What an enriching experience! My first day at METSTRADE was a whirlwind of inspiring discussions and future-focused insights. Here's a recap of the day: 🌅 Morning: Women In The Marine Industry International Breakfast event I had the privilege of listening to female leaders in the marine industry discussing leadership development, AI and industry foresight. My key takeaways: 🔹 Define your value: Reflect deeply on what makes you unique and how you can bring value. 🔹 Listening is crucial: Analyse and understand before speaking. 🔹 Empathy and authenticity: Lead with compassion and stay true to yourself. 🔹 The power of connection: Building one-to-one relationships strengthens communication and fosters sustainable cultures. We also explored AI’s growing role in the industry, with 74% of marine companies already leveraging it for creativity, productivity, and decision-making. It’s clear that technology is driving innovation, but the human element remains central. The conversations also touched on the future of the marine industry: 🔹 Technology drives progress: Startups and entrepreneurs will lead the way in making boating more accessible and user-friendly. 🔹 Sustainability is critical: The industry must embrace technical innovations to reduce consumption and build a more sustainable future. 🔹 Diversity and inclusion: With only 3% of the global marine workforce being women, there’s still a need to amplify diverse voices and foster mentorship for younger generations. ⚡ A thought-provoking reminder: Stop talking about empowering women. We already have the power — it’s about how we use and amplify it. ⚡ 🌊 Afternoon: Exploring Industry Foresight in Sail Racing In the afternoon, I joined the opening of the Yacht Racing Forum, where Marit Bouwmeester OLY inspired the audience with her call to support the next generation of sailors. The panels also discussed how innovations like those in the America's Cup could trickle down to benefit recreational sailors, showing how technology can drive progress across all levels of the industry. Key messages from the afternoon included: 🔹 Growth mindset: “It’s hard to learn if you already know.” Growth requires openness and humility. 🔹 Breaking barriers: Make sailing more inclusive by lowering financial and logistical hurdles. 🔹 AI in racing: Leverage AI to enhance performance while preserving the athleticism of the sport. The day left me inspired to dig deeper into my unique contributions and to embrace the opportunities for growth and change within the marine world. What are your thoughts on fostering innovation and inclusivity in your field? Let’s share some ideas! 🌟 Recap on day 2 will follow. #METSTRADE #MarineIndustry #sailracing #leadership #LeadershipInsights #AI #YachtRacingForum #TheMagentaProject

On the eve of the Vendée Globe start, Magenta x IMOCA powered by 11th Hour Racing brought together over 60 members of the sailing industry to discuss the current status and future goals for women in sailing. The event was a combination of a panel, workshop, documentary premiere, and networking experience, which was all visually captured live by illustrator Hélène Pouille. The design illustrates the current challenges for women, but also their triumphs, and further support needed for them to succeed. While these conversations directly addressed challenges for women in our sport, they are also gender equity challenges that women face in industries around the world. The ultimate goal of these multi-stakeholder programmes is to design and build systemic support for more equity and inclusion for women across the board. Equally fun, scary and important that Search Magazine highlights my participation, aspirations and goals as a mentee in the The Magenta Project. 🙌 Fun because they highlight it! 😱 Scary as I'm 100% open with my hopes & goals - and what if I don't achieve them?! ❗Important because of the program's mission to inspire, upskill and change culture in sailing towards a more inclusive sport globally. Also important because more Swedish female sailors should apply for this program next year! Now I'm off to the METSTRADE to attend the Yacht Racing Forum and the Women In The Marine Industry International events, meet with parts of the Magenta Group, my mentor Emma York and hopefully lots of other inspiring industry professionals! Meet up there? Drop me a comment or send me a DM 👋 Read the full article through the link. https://lnkd.in/dsUeUauq

Last Monday at the Vendée Globe, Magenta x IMOCA powered by 11th Hour Racing hosted a special event to “Keep women (in) sailing from 10 to 100” The 4-hour event included a panel featuring Olympic IQ Foiler Hélène Noesmoen, Clarisse Crémer, the fastest woman to circumnavigate the globe in an IMOCA; Paul Meilhat, offshore champion and Ocean Race veteran; and Rosalin Kuiper, who is preparing to compete as the skipper of Team Holcim-PRB in the Ocean Race Europe while also welcoming her first child. The lively panel discussion that covered personal stories and perspectives on the topic was followed by an interactive workshop, which reflected on the last 50 years of the sport and series of resolutions to reach a truly gender inclusive and equal industry. Over 60 members of the sailing industry, from IMOCA skippers and leaders, Magenta alumni and mentors to shipbuilders like BENETEAU participated in the conversation and helped to design 10 resolutions for the industry. Thank you to all partners and participants who made this event possible. Read more about the event and the 10 resolutions here: https://lnkd.in/eEJrscHY 📸 Flore Hartout | polaRYSE

Last week, The Magenta Project proudly hosted our STEM Clinic during the historic PUIG Women's America's Cup — a monumental event in the world of sailing! 🙌⚓ We were thrilled to have 14 incredible women attend the clinic, representing fields like engineering, naval architecture, and sports management. Their passion for learning and dedication to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in STEM and sailing were truly inspiring. 💡💪 A huge thank you to the incredible teams that generously hosted us throughout the week, and to all of our amazing guest speakers who shared their time and knowledge so freely. From performance analysis and meteorology sessions to foil design, sail making, rigging, mechatronics, and insightful career chats, the week was packed with opportunities to dive into the technical side of the sport. Everyone who supported us this week is playing a critical role in helping us break down barriers and empower more women to enter STEM fields — not just in sailing, but across all industries. 🌟 A huge thank you to our sponsor, Future Fibres, for making this event possible and to the Museu Marítim de Barcelona for hosting us in their beautiful space.
