Twenty years ago, an idea became a reality – CPI was born ✨ We started with two people, one desk in the North East of England, and a clear vision for a better future. Nigel Perry MBE FREng, our former CEO and current board member, was one of those two people there on day one. He sat down with our current CEO, Frank Millar, at The Catalyst to revisit those early days, tell us the story of how CPI came to be, and reminisce over an incredible 20 years. 4basebio is transforming DNA delivery for next-generation therapies 🧬⬇️ High-quality DNA is in demand for gene therapies and vaccines to treat cancer and many other rare and devastating diseases. It’s also the starting point for mRNA vaccines, such as those used to protect people against COVID-19. Conventional DNA manufacture involves inserting the required gene into a bacterial plasmid, but this introduces safety issues. 4basebio has developed a revolutionary non-viral DNA platform that enables precise, scalable, and safer genetic modification—opening new possibilities across biotech, vaccine development, and advanced therapies. Unlike viral vectors, this synthetic DNA system reduces safety risks and manufacturing challenges, making it a promising alternative for therapeutic development. With CPI’s expertise and support, 4basebio has: 🔬 Optimised DNA manufacturing for high purity and scalability. ⚙️ Developed advanced characterisation techniques to ensure quality and consistency. 🛠️ Demonstrated manufacturability to accelerate commercial translation. By overcoming key barriers to genetic delivery, 4basebio is enabling the next wave of biopharmaceutical innovation. It was great to welcome Anna Turley MP for Redcar and Cleveland back to CPI today. Having opened an experimental fermentation plant at Wilton in 2016, this visit was an excellent opportunity to show Anna how our circular and sustainable materials projects have developed since then. The variety of SMEs that we are supporting has increased, and we are demonstrating how the technologies of engineering biology can drive growth. The Tees Valley region has a rich history of industrial excellence, and collaboration is key to unlocking its full potential. By working closely with government, industry, and academia, we can accelerate innovation, create high-value jobs, and strengthen the UK’s position as a global leader in commercialising science and technology for the benefit of UK citizens. We’re grateful for Anna’s support and look forward to continuing our work together to drive regional growth and long-term prosperity. The Biomedical Catalyst (BMC), one of Innovate UK’s flagship grant funding mechanisms, has been delivering growth to the UK health and life sciences sector since 2012. As part of this work, over £390m of funding and support has delivered advances in medicines and pharmaceuticals, medical devices, diagnostics and digital health technologies. Companies, trade associations, stakeholders and investors came together today to celebrate just some of the BMC success stories of recent years, and to look at what the future might hold for the programme. Dr. Stella Peace, Interim Executive Chair of Innovate UK, started the day by speaking about the importance of collaboration to delivering success and impact. She highlighted how organisations such as those represented at the event have all contributed to making the UK a world leader in life sciences. We were pleased to welcome Steve Bates OBE FMedSci, CEO of the BioIndustry Association (BIA), who shared his thoughts on the state of the life sciences industry and the importance of the BMC. He highlighted some of the key benefits of the programme, including the validation of company ideas that the BMC provides, as well as early investor engagement. Panel and pitch sessions were led by Steve Bates, Nicola Heron, Chief Strategy Officer at Medicines Discovery Catapult, Kath Mackay, Chief Scientific Officer at Bruntwood SciTech and Rahul Kapoor, Director of Health Tech at CPI. Thanks go to the London Institute for Healthcare Engineering, which kindly hosted our event. #BiomedicalCatalyst #HealthCare #FemTech #AIinHealth #DigitalHealth
