About us

Cover Photo: UN Women/Mariam Alimi We are UN Women, the only global agency dedicated to gender equality. Created in 2010, UN Women is the UN organisation dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. A global champion for women and girls, UN Women was established to accelerate progress on meeting their needs worldwide. UN Women supports UN Member States as they set global standards for achieving gender equality, and works with governments and civil society to design laws, policies, programmes and services needed to ensure that the standards are effectively implemented and truly benefit women and girls worldwide. Gender inequality affects all women and girls in all countries across the world. UN Women UK is focussed on changing the way the world works for women from a UK perspective, setting the strategic direction for the UK, and delivering policies, programmes and campaigns, in the local UK context. We partner with our strong government, business and civil society network to reduce gender discrimination and improve the lives of women and girls across the country.

International Relations BA at the University of Sussex/ Global Youth Ambassador @Theirworld/ UN Women UK CSW69 Participant

Yesterday morning, I had the privilege of attending a #UNWomenUK Briefing Club and Breakfast. Hosted by Tabitha Morton (Executive Director #UNWomenUK) and Atonte Semira (Head of Community #UNWomenUK), I had the honor of connecting with them and several inspiring women. All of us are participating in the #UNITEDNATIONS sixty-ninth session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69) and are interested in tools of advocacy that we can bring back to our communities to create immediate change. #CSW69 emphasizes rights, equality and empowerment #forALLwomen and #ALLgirls; the language we use around activism is important. I learned that negotiations can extend for hours in debate over singular words in reports. I also received insight into the real and current statistics: Last year, the number of women killed in war doubled 97% of women aged 18-24 reported experiencing sexual harassment. Apathy is not an option. The UK has the most diverse parliament in its history, but this is not secure; there is a real risk of a reversal of this progression. Indifference to gender inequality transmutes to real world gendered violence. I learned about the paradoxical nature of allocating funds: spending on aid (which directly helps women) is being pulled and funneled into the defense budget. However, data tells us that women's participation in politics extends peace by up to 20 years. On a positive note, I learned that the UK government’s next goal is to close the gendered ethnicity pay gap. As a digital participant of #CSW69, I will take my findings back to my community at the University of Sussex. No longer confined to the halls of the United Nations in New York, this widened participation means that both grassroots activists and parliamentarians can be partisan to negotiations. Away from inflammatory sexist comments on online spheres of influence, countless women are advocating within their communities. Gender equality is achievable, and we must operate from a position of hope, confidence, and action rather than empty words and dampened spirits. The Briefing Club renewed my faith, and I hope to attend again. #CSW69 #UNWOMENUK #UNWOMEN #GENDEREQUALITY

  • Behind the headlines, beyond the battlefield, there is another story unfolding in Ukraine. A story of women and girls who are bearing the brunt of this war, yet standing resilient, leading their communities, and working toward a better future.   Three years of full-scale war has pushed an entire generation of Ukrainian women and girls backward in terms of rights, safety, and economic opportunities.   Gender-based violence is up by 36%.   Depression rates amongst women and girls have worsened.   Unpaid care is rising.   The gender pay gap has doubled.   In 2024 alone, UN Women supported more than 180,000 women and girls affected by the war through initiatives under the Women Peace and Humanitarian Fund.   The agency provides life-saving humanitarian aid, psychosocial and legal support, protection services and programmes to strengthen women’s economic independence.   Three years since the beginning of the war, UN Women is working to ensure that women are included in decision-making and recovery efforts, advocating for legal reforms to secure equal rights and representation. • This is a rallying cry: the backlash against gender equality is growing. We need you to help us stop it.   We’ve expanded capacity to give even more of you the chance to join us for CSW this year. To say YES to women’s rights, equality and empowerment. YES to a gender equal future. YES to ALL women and girls.   The application deadline has been extended to 9am Monday 24th February. ✨ Exciting News! ✨ I’m absolutely thrilled to share that I’ve been accepted as a UN Women UK Digital Participant at the 69th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69)! This year’s session is particularly significant as we mark 30 years since the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (1995)—a milestone in the global fight for gender equality and women’s empowerment. From 10–21 March 2025, representatives from governments, UN entities, and NGOs worldwide will gather at the United Nations Headquarters in New York to assess progress, tackle challenges, and drive action towards the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. 💡 As a Digital Participant, I’m eager to: 1️⃣ Gain fresh insights into the global progress (and setbacks) in gender equality. 2️⃣ Engage with inspiring changemakers and learn from their experiences. 3️⃣ Amplify key discussions and bring these conversations to wider audiences. This is an incredible opportunity to engage in global conversations about gender equality, connect with change-makers, and contribute to shaping policies that advance women's rights worldwide. I can’t wait to be part of this crucial dialogue and contribute in any way I can! Let’s keep pushing for real, lasting change. 💜 #CSW69 #UNWomenUK #GenderEquality #WomenEmpowerment
