Collaboration between the UK and APAC in quantum technology is heating up... 🔥 👀 As part of the recent UK National Quantum Technology Showcase, we organised business matching for eleven of the UK’s leading quantum tech innovators with technology giants and venture capitalists from the Asia Pacific region. 🇬🇧🇯🇵🇰🇷🇹🇼 APAC corporates in attendance included Fujitsu and Qunasys from Japan, Qunova Computing and Quantum Intelligence from South Korea and Taiwania Capital and Mediatek from Taiwan. The UK quantum innovators companies that took part were Element Six, Quantum Software Lab, Wave Photonics and Phasecraft. James Lee, CEO and co-founder of Wave Photonics, talks to us about how they are enabling rapid photonic integrated circuit development for any wavelength or platform. James explains how the design for integrated photonics uses the same scalable process used to make semiconductor electronics chips to make circuits for light. And he talks about the market opportunity for both tackling energy and bandwidth, and longer term with sensing and quantum. Founded in May 2021 by Cambridge Quantum Photonics PhDs James Lee, Matthew A. and Mateusz Kubica, a seasoned expert in computational modeling, Wave Photonics set out to reshape the photonics landscape with its advanced photonic integrated circuits (PICs). Recognizing the need for a streamlined, scalable approach to integrated photonics development, Wave Photonics developed a unique computational design technology aimed at addressing the high costs and lengthy development cycles that often hinder PIC production. This design solution enables faster, more efficient development, opening doors to valuable applications in quantum computing, biosensing, wearable healthcare sensors, and data center technologies. The Cambridge-based deep tech startup recently reached a significant milestone, securing £4.5 million in funding led by the UK Innovation & Science Seed Fund and Cambridge Enterprise Ventures. The funding round saw participation from Redstone, QAI Ventures' Quantum Fund, Kyra Ventures, Parkwalk Advisors’ University of Cambridge Enterprise Fund IX, and Deeptech Labs. Additionally, non-dilutive funding from EIC and Innovate UK brought the total raised to £5.4 million ($6.9 million). This critical support has empowered Wave Photonics to transition from research manufacturing to commercial foundries, accelerating its vision of making photonic integration accessible for transformative sectors, including AI, quantum communication, and optical computing. 😎 It is great to see how start-ups grow and evolve fast and sustainably thanks to their hard work, and Wave Photonics ♒ is a great example! Last week I had the pleasure of visiting their new facilities (very nice!), and we talked about their latest developments in component design for visible wavelengths and wafer-scale testing to statistically validate designs. Because, do you know? ⁉ They are a UK-based company, specializing in applying optimization techniques integrated photonics design to create fabrication-tolerant components for any wavelength or material platform. The company aims to provide a smooth journey from idea to packaged device, especially for customers working in frontier applications of integrated photonics, such as sensing and quantum technologies. They already participated in many of our EPIC - EUROPEAN PHOTONICS INDUSTRY CONSORTIUM activities, contributing actively to the enrichment of our community, and we are happy about that.
