Excellence in British architecture and product design.

About us

Established in 1971, the Wood Awards recognises, encourages and promotes outstanding wood design, craftsmanship and installation. The Wood Awards' elite independent judging panel not only judges all submitted entries but also visits the shortlisted projects in person, making the Wood Awards a uniquely rigorous competition. The Awards are split into two main categories: Building and Furniture & Product. The Gold Award is given to the project that the judges deem to be the winner of winners. The building judging panel is led by Jim Greaves of Hopkins Architects. The furniture and product panel is led by Sebastian Cox, a designer, craftsman and environmentalist. As a not-for-profit competition, the Wood Awards can only happen with collaborative industry sponsorship. Our major partners are the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC), the Carpenters' Company and Timber Development UK (TDUK). Join our mission to find the best architecture and product design in wood.

🌟 Education & Public Sector Winner – Clare College 🌟 The stunning River Wing at Clare College, Cambridge’s second-oldest college, exemplifies the perfect harmony of cutting-edge technology and traditional craftsmanship. Designed with precision and built with care, this oak-framed extension provides a transformative addition to the college’s historic campus. 🏛️ What makes it remarkable? ✨ An oak glulam structural frame, maximizing space and daylight. ✨ Carefully crafted CLT floors and a 3-storey lift shaft. ✨ Over 525 intricate structural connections, inspired by traditional carpentry. ✨ A thoughtfully designed riverside café, walkways, galleries, lift, and staircase. 🏗️ Construction Marvel: Rising from a challenging, narrow site, large timber elements were preassembled off-site, and then skillfully installed on-site. The result? A breathtaking balance of geometry and connection, seamlessly blending the old and the new. 💬 The judges praised this project as a cleverly designed and constructed predominantly timber building that unlocks spaces, creates new connections, and fits beautifully into its riverside surroundings. This remarkable project is an inspiring example of how timber can shape and enhance our built environment. 🏆 👏 Congratulations to the project team who brought this ambitious vision to life. 🏆 Best New Commercial Building | WorkStack by dRMM Rising from a compact urban site in Greenwich, London, WorkStack redefines urban industrial design with innovation and sustainability. Designed by dRMM, this visionary high-density industrial space, inspired by the protective form of a ‘log stack,’ has been crowned the Best New Commercial Building at the #WoodAwards24. 🌳 Sustainability at its Core · Constructed from stacked Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) boxes. · Achieves 21% less upfront embodied carbon than LETI's 2030 Design Target. 343 metric tonnes of carbon sequestered in the CLT structure. · Delivered in just 15 lorries and assembled in nine weeks by a small team. ✨ Design Highlights · The cantilevered form doubles as solar shading and a covered delivery area. · Exposed CLT walls and ceilings showcase the natural beauty of timber, enhancing biophilic benefits. · Efficient, panelised components minimise material use without compromising function or aesthetics. 🌟 The Wood Awards judges praised WorkStack for demonstrating timber’s potential in creating replicable, high-density industrial buildings suitable for urban spaces. Lead judge Jim Greaves (Hopkins Architects) said: “It is a highly original approach to urban industrial design, pragmatic and spatially efficient while showcasing the structural possibilities of engineered timber.” 👏 Congratulations to the project team who brought this ambitious vision to life.
