Updates

  • Encouraging to hear that new tests for prostate cancer being developed in the UK could revolutionise management by enabling earlier detection and more accurate risk prediction. At present, there's no national screening programme due to the fact that tests cannot reliably detect prostate cancer that requires early-stage treatment. This is despite it being the most commonly diagnosed cancer in England with more than 55,000 men diagnosed with it in 2023. The new tests show promising signs of improving diagnosis, screening and potential outcomes as a result for men impacted by prostate cancer. You can find out more about the research developments via the link below in today's The Independent article. 👇 https://lnkd.in/ewcPRe5Q #prostatecancer #workingwithcancer #cancerresearch

  • Cancer will affect 1 in 2 of us at some point in our lifetime. As a line manager or HR professional, being able to support your employees when they experience the impact of a cancer diagnosis or treatment is vital. We recently worked with a team of mortgage advisors for a well-known corporate organisation and received this positive feedback from one of the managers: "Thank you so much for your support and guidance with the colleagues who are in my team and have been affected by Cancer. Your support and understanding is very much appreciated and while I have always dedicated as much time as I can to supporting my colleagues and friends with their ongoing wellness, it has been a worry for me that I am doing enough. I will continue to do so and I just wanted to say how much I value your support, it is such a comfort and peace of mind to have a support network now of people that I can turn to." Having the right support and access to the right information is essential. At Working With Cancer, our team of experts all have some level of lived experience of being impacted by cancer. 👉 If you would like to find out more about how we can support your organisation and team, get in touch via our website.  #workingwithcancer #HR #LineManagers #EmployeeWellness

  • The first step in supporting your employees who have been affected by cancer is to be better informed. In the Bevan survey undertaken by Working With Cancer in partnership with the Institute for Employment Studies last year, only 4% of organisations said they currently have a specific cancer policy and only 45% of HR managers felt they needed one. These results indicate an absence of a strategic approach to managing employees with cancer which could result in employees not being treated consistently. We've put together a number of 'Best Practice Guides' for HR and line managers to help better support employees. There are 4 guides which include: ✅ Line Managers ✅ Employees (diagnosed with cancer) ✅ Working Carers ✅ Colleagues You can access the guides on our website. Each version is available as a download in PDF format or as a hard copy. #workingwithcancer #HR #Employeewellness

  • A joint report from Disability@Work and the Institute of Directors (IoD) on mandatory disability reporting was recently published. Disability@Work is a longstanding advocate of mandatory reporting to help raise awareness and provide employers with the crucial information they need. The report outlines support for the government's plans to introduce disability pay gap reporting in the draft Equality (Race and Disability) Bill. It is also a key ask of the 'The Disability Employment Charter', which has been signed by over 240 organisations. Working With Cancer's founder Barbara Wilson commented: "Please let's not forget that the Bevan Survey we commissioned last year showed that only 4% of employers collect data on those who have cancer and who are classified as disabled under the Equality Act. This group along with all those who have long-term health conditions are also in danger of being ignored or discriminated against unintentionally by employers." You can read more about this and access the full report in the post shared below. 👇 https://lnkd.in/e8pvFQUb

Our joint report on mandatory disability reporting with the Institute of Directors (IoD) is out today At Disability@Work, we have been longstanding advocates of mandatory reporting, given its potential to push disability up the corporate agenda and give employers the information they need to track their progress. It is also a key ask of the The Disability Employment Charter, which has now been signed by over 240 organisations. 👍 In our report (available at: https://lnkd.in/diNGGJdQ), we outline our support for the government's plans to introduce disability pay gap reporting in the draft Equality (Race and Disability) Bill. 👉 However, we argue that if we are we are to understand what employers’ pay gap figures really mean, we also need to know how many disabled people they employ as a percentage of their workforce. This is because if employers report very small disability pay gaps, yet they employ proportionately very few disabled employees who happen to be in relatively senior positions, this should not be seen as a clear indicator of success. Conversely, where employers have a relatively large disability pay gap, this might be due to noteworthy efforts to hire large numbers of disabled employees into entry-level roles, with a view to promoting them later on. Hence the need for the government to include mandatory disability employment reporting as well as pay gap reporting in the draft Bill. 👉 The report also highlights that only just over half of disabled people of working age are in employment compared with over 80 per cent of non-disabled people. We argue that mandatory disability employment reporting will help reduce this gap by encouraging employers to focus on how many disabled people they employ. We also point to the potential for mandatory reporting to aid reform of the government’s Disability Confident scheme by allowing the certification criteria to be based on employers’ disability employment outcomes rather than the policies and practices they say they have adopted. 👉 It is important, however, that the government gets the design of the scheme right. Regarding this, we highlight the importance of employers being required to use a standardised question and data collection method when asking employees about their disability status, to ensure the data are comparable across organisations. We also argue that employers should report a hybrid metric that combines their disability employment and pay gap data into a single measure. It has been fantastic working with Institute of Directors (IoD) on this project, and we sincerely hope the Cabinet Office find our proposals helpful in developing the plans for disability reporting in the draft Equality (Race and Disability) Bill.

  • Why do so many organisations not have a cancer policy in place? With 1 in 2 of us likely to be impacted by cancer in our lifetime, organisations cannot ignore the need to be better informed and prepared to provide the right support for employees. Barbara Wilson Founder of Working With Cancer joined Mervyn Dinnen on his latest podcast episode for 'HR Means Business' to share the latest research on how organisations can help support those in their workforce who have had, or are having, treatment for cancer.   During the conversation, they discuss : 🔸 Why do so few organisations seem to have a cancer policy in place? 🔸 The poor level of coaching offered to managers and directors to have necessary sensitive conversations with employees having cancer treatment (78% have not provided training) 🔸 Why work is so important to cancer patients undergoing treatment. 🔸 What workplace adjustments are offered, and which ones are still needed? 🔸 The need for HR to have clear policies and practices that are easily accessible and understood by employees. 🔸 Reintegrating employees after their cancer treatment 🔸 Advice for HR on having open conversations and the need to be understanding and supportive You can listen to the episode by clicking on the link below 👇 https://lnkd.in/gbu-JB4S #workingwithcancer #podcast #HR #employeewellness #employeesupport
