Agriculture plays a major role in 𝗨𝘇𝗯𝗲𝗸𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻 and 𝗧𝗮𝗷𝗶𝗸𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻, but both countries are facing increasing vulnerability in this sector. Food insecurity and reliance on imports leave them vulnerable to climate change and geopolitical shifts.🌾🏔️ In a four-year SWITCH-Asia Official project implemented by adelphi research, these issues were addressed by analysing and developing Sustainable Consumption and Production (#SCP) pathways across the agri-food chain. The project supports MSMEs in adopting resource-efficient methods, improve access to #cleantech finance, and building local expertise to sustain long-term change. Emily Wright-O'Kelly and Toby Bernstein participated in the final conference of the #Horizon2020 𝗛𝗔𝗕𝗜𝗧𝗔𝗕𝗟𝗘 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 in Nairobi, Kenya, concluding four years of research into the nexus between migration, climate change, and habitability. 🌍🌡️🎥 adelphi research worked with a consortium of 21 institutions, including partners in Ghana, Mali, Kenya, Ethiopia, South Africa, Senegal and Thailand on the interdisciplinary project, marked by a range of research methods. 𝟯 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀: 🟢 HABITABLE has 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲: Habitability, adaptive capacities, and mobility patterns are shaped by a variety of structural conditions, by subjective perceptions of those conditions, and – crucially - by the policy responses that aim to address them. 🟢 To communicate this nexus to experts and non-experts, adelphi research co-developed 𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼 𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 in Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mali and Thailand, sharing them via animated videos and a report to engage policymakers and communities. 🟢 The scenarios highlight that 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝘀 are required to ensure a habitable future. Understanding conditions on the ground is essential to develop the right solutions for each context and research that includes meaningful engagement with local communities is a key building block in this. Campaigning for the 𝗙𝗲𝗯𝗿𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 𝘀𝗻𝗮𝗽 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗳𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 is already in full swing, with political lines being drawn. Amid the turmoil, the 𝗽𝗼𝗽𝘂𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 is using 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 to push its far-right agenda, presenting it as an alternative to climate protection. But far from offering solutions, their approach undermines effective adaptation, endangers vulnerable groups and uses crises such as floods and wildfires to fuel nationalist rhetoric. First 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆, now 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸: end-of-November sales have become a global trend. Businesses, many of them online, compete for consumer spending with huge discounts across sectors from electronics to fashion to travel deals. 🛍️ But shopping sprees like these are not without environmental impact. A recent study published in the journal 𝘚𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺: 𝘚𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦, 𝘗𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘗𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘺, co-authored by adelphi Experts Maren T. and Lena Domröse reveals the significant impact of household consumption on carbon emissions and waste of resources. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dkHRUJyD Through research and policy support on the links between consumption, digitalisation, biodiversity, and climate protection, adelphi helps citizens, policymakers, and the private sector take meaningful action on pathways toward sustainable consumption. 🌍 🔄 Find out more about our work in sustainable consumption here: ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dZwvGSqQ #BuyNothingFriday #GreenFriday #SustainableConsumption
