From the AB archives: 95 years ago, AB began construction of a seven-span, 5,620-foot, through truss railway bridge with a vertical lift span in Martinez, California. The Union Pacific Railroad Suisun Bay Bridge makes up one of the three parallel bridges referred to as the Benicia-Martinez Bridge which crosses the Carquinez Strait. Originally built for the Southern Pacific Railroad, the bridge is now used by Union Pacific Railroad, BNSF, and Amtrak. #BuildingGreatThings Southland Holdings - #constructionhistory #engineering #bridgebuilding

The team is celebrating the re-opening of the bridge and is nearing completion of the project. This project involved the major rehabilitation of the structural, mechanical, and electrical components of the bridge. From the AB Archives: 64 years ago, AB completed the construction of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge in Michigan. The double-deck, vertical-lift rail and highway bridge was constructed with a single-track railroad on the lower deck and a four-lane roadway on the upper deck. The overall length of the bridge is 1,310’, with a 268' lift span, and is supported by two 180' tall steel towers. The middle section has clearances of 4’ when fully lowered, 32-36’ at the intermediate position, and 100’ when fully raised. From the AB Archives: 85 years ago, AB completed the fabrication and erection of the first 9 buildings plus a plaza for the Rockefeller Center in New York City. The project included the erection of 95,000 tons of structural steel.
