🛥️ During the AQUARIUS General Assembly in Helsinki last week we had the chance to visit RV Aranda! 🏞️ Managed by Finnish Environment Institute (Syke) - Suomen ympäristökeskus (Syke), RV Aranda is designed for marine research, biological, physical, hydrographic, geophysical and geotechnical surveys and it has sailed for these purposes in several seas, visiting both the Arctic and Antarctic regions. 🎛️ On board the vessel, we had the opportunity to speak with scientists and crew who told us stories of their expeditions in the Baltic and showed us the equipment they use to take water samples from 3km deep where the pressure is about 300 times higher than at sea level. 📌 We also saw one of the gliders operated by The Finnish Meteorological Institute - Ilmatieteen laitos. These gliders traverse pre-programmed routes, collecting data on temperature, salinity, oxygen levels, chlorophyll concentration, turbidity, and colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM). ➡️ Both these research infrastructures play crucial roles in understanding the Baltic Sea ecosystem. 🛥️ After an intense first year of activities, the first in-person AQUARIUS General Assembly is taking place in Finland, Helsinki, with thanks to our local host partner, Finnish Environment Institute (Syke) - Suomen ympäristökeskus (Syke). 🏞️ This morning, AQUARIUS partners received a warm welcome from Jukka Seppälä (SYKE) where we learned some “cool” and “hot” facts about Finland!  Our coordinator, Aodhán F. then took the floor, thanking partners for all the hard work in the past year and extending thanks also to the wider research community for the excellent response to our first Transnational Access Call! ➡️ What's on today’s agenda?🙋♀️ 🔹 We start with a plenary meeting where all work packages will update the consortium on their progress, project milestones and next steps. 🔹 We will then continue to more in depth discussions of the work activities, focusing in particular today on the core work of AQUARIUS - providing transnational access to the AQUARIUS research infrastructure portfolio. 🔹 Finally, this afternoon we will have an opportunity to visit one of the research vessels in our catalogue, with a tour of the RV Aranda! 🔹 The discussions continue into the evening in a more informal setting! ➡️ Stay tuned for more news on the AQUARIUS General Assembly! 📢 🎉Thank you to everyone who applied for the first AQUARIUS Transnational Access Funding Call! 🏄🏽♀️ With applications spanning all EU Mission Ocean Lighthouse Regions🌍 and incorporating a wide array of research infrastructures for marine and freshwater science, the call was a big success! Proposals have been submitted and checked for: ✅eligibility & ✅logistic feasibility 🙋🏽♀️What's next? ➡️We are now entering the scientific evaluation phase where proposals will be evaluated by external, independent scientific experts.
