BALTIC2HAND project improves textile reuse and reduces textile waste in the second-hand market.

About us

As good as new: Enhancing the behavioral and business change of the second-hand textile industry in the Central Baltic region BALTIC2HAND project improves textile reuse and reduces textile waste in the second-hand market from 1.4.2023 until 30.3.2026. In the Baltic Second-Hand project, organizations in the fashion and textile industry in Estonia, Finland, Latvia, and Sweden develop their business models towards sustainability and circular economy free of charge. Using a service design process, the project maps and designs new opportunities in re-using textiles and in reducing textile waste. The project tests and pilots potential solutions and promotes consumer use of secondhand textiles. This project is organized by Laurea University of Applied Sciences, Turku University of Applied Sciences, Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Tallinn Business Incubators Foundation, and Sustainability InnoCenter. Baltic2hand is an Interreg Central Baltic Programme 2021-2027 project that is co-funded by the European Union. For more information, visit our website: balticsecondhand.eu

  • Discover actionable insights from the Circle Economy’s Circularity Gap Report Textiles - an in-depth analysis of global textile industry circularity. What’s the true environmental cost of the textile industry? 👉 The global textile industry is only 0.3% circular 👉 A staggering 99% of the 3.25 billion tonnes of materials consumed annually are sourced from virgin materials 👉 One-third of the ever-growing pile of low-quality, inexpensive clothing never reaches consumers 👉 Nearly 2/3 of textile waste ends up in landfills or incinerators It's time for change! Six strategic approaches could make the industry three times more circular and 50% less damaging to the environment. • ♻ How can we reduce textile waste and promote the re-use of textiles? What kinds of new or improved business models, services, and solutions can help companies achieve these goals? 💡 Last Wednesday, we reached a milestone in our "ReDesign Textile Business: Prototype & Test Your Idea!" journey with the final prototyping workshop of the Baltic2Hand project! 🌟 Twelve innovative companies showcased their prototypes, sharing their key learnings and next steps for advancing their solutions. We were also heard an inspiring keynote from Mikko Siukosaari, Ninyes Inc on prototyping resale solutions, adding even more depth to the day’s discussions. It was truly inspiring to see the progress made and hear the valuable insights gained throughout this process. Together, we’ve taken important steps toward creating a more sustainable future. 💪 But the journey doesn’t end here – next spring, we’ll shift our focus to piloting these solutions! 🚀 #Baltic2Hand #TextileReuse #CircularEconomy #CentralBalticProgramme Baltic2Hand is funded by an Interreg Central Baltic Programme 2021-2027 project that is co-funded by the European Union.

Service Designer, Expert in Inclusion and Sustainability, Project Manager

Last week I had the honor of presenting our project Baltic2Hand at the Nordic Baltic Design Summit in Gothenburg, organized by SVID, Swedish Industrial Design Foundation and Svensk Form We had a very inspirational summit with examples of how design can enhance circularity and sustainability of business, public and other sectors. Coming from a Service Design perspective I especially enjoyed the more product design relayed cases. I think as a Service Designer it can be easy to forget that design is also about beauty and practicality of life, in addition to supporting value creation of different actors. Looking forward to the new collaborations and networks emerging from this event! Thank you Anna Velander Gisslén for organizing! As a part of my presentation on How design can help with circular transformation of textile industry, I told a story about the dress that I am wearing. I bought it at Relove, a second-hand shop at the Helsinki-Vantaa airport in the way to the summit. I think this perfectly illustrates how the second-hand apparel market is changing! Instead of rummaging through flea market tables you can now purchase second hand clothing as a part of a business trip.

♻ How do we decrease textile waste and increase the re-use of textiles? What kinds of new or improved business models, services and other solutions benefit companies to meet these targets? 💡 In our workshop series: “ReDesign Textile Business: Prototype & Test Your Idea!” we had yesterday an exciting day! We had our 3th prototyping and testing workshop in which we heard the testing results of the prototypes. It was truly amazing to see the current state of the prototypes and hear about the results. Overall, the testing results were positive. One of our goals is to build a circular value chain/chain we started to draft yesterday: together we are more. 💪 Our journey continues towards the final prototyping and testing workshop 27.11. #Baltic2Hand #TextileReuse #CircularEconomy #CentralBalticProgramme Baltic2Hand is funded by an Interreg Central Baltic Programme 2021-2027 project that is co-funded by the European Union.

  • Have you heard about nudging? 🤓 It's one way to get consumers to make choices that are better for the environment.   The nudges can be useful in persuading people to choose a certain service or product. You have probably come across nudging in everyday life: for example, placements of items in stores have been carefully thought to increase sales.   In Baltic2Hand project we looked into green nudging theory and made three most apparent nudges suitable for three different consumer personas 🍀 Read more 👉 https://lnkd.in/gn8mbEmy #Baltic2Hand #nudging #CircularEconomy #TextileReuse #CentralBalticProgramme #consumers

  • 🌍 During September, Central Baltic Programme organized Central Baltic Connect Event, where over 60 funded projects from Estonia, Latvia, Finland, Åland, and Sweden came together to network, learn, and explore collaborations. ♻️ We had a great opportunity to introduce the Baltic2Hand project and its activities. The project focuses on promoting behavioral and business changes in the second-hand textile industry. Throughout the project, we've had the chance to work with several interesting companies through our workshops. One of them is Humana, with whom we collaborated to organize a visit to their sorting center for participants of the Connect Event. Mari-Helene Kaber shared Humana's experience with building a second-hand textile business and it's challenges. 🆘 The visit was eye-opening, providing a clear understanding of the scale of the textile waste problem. For example, at the Humana sorting center, they sorted 6,635 tons of products in 2023, dividing them into 160 categories. #Baltic2Hand #CircularEconomy #TextileReuse #recycling  #CentralBalticProgramme
