Bochen Zhang and Prof. Martin Fischer from CIFE - Center for Integrated Facility Engineering recently presented at Project Production Institute's 2nd Technical Conference, sharing insights from their case study on implementing the Production System Optimization (PSO) framework to offsite construction production management. As offsite construction offers solutions to challenges like housing shortages, it also presents complex management issues by producing with assembly lines and supplying the parts to the construction site. PSO is the practice of mapping, modeling, analyzing and simulating a production system and achieve the best desired performance. This case study applied a PSO approach, using a production process digital twin to model and optimize the production capacity, inventory, and variability, aligning offsite modular part supply with onsite installation demand. The analysis results provided deeper insights into production processes to enhance efficiency, predictability, and profitability in the modular offsite project. #OffsiteConstruction, #SupplyChainManagement, #ModernConstruction, #OperationsScience, #ProjectProductionManagement

The best and brightest minds in building and construction in Australia and from around the world will come together to discuss and debate the key challenges facing our industry at the Building 4.0 CRC Conference 2024.
2024 ANNUAL CONFERENCE | 3 September 2024 The Building 4.0 CRC Conference 2024 is Making it happen. The best and brightest minds in building and construction in Australia and from around the world will come together to discuss and debate the key challenges facing our industry: — How do we build a sustainable MMC (Modern Methods of Construction) industry? What works? What doesn’t? What successes can we apply and what pitfalls can we avoid? — What policy and regulatory reforms do we need to accelerate MMC? Why isn’t MMC business as usual? How do we foster the champions for change? — What is driving the burgeoning demand for social housing? How can we meet it? — How do we extend building life? Why don’t we retrofit or repurpose buildings, instead of pulling them down? — What business models support environmental and economic sustainability? How do we create a circular building economy? — How do we get to the future? Join us as we bring together solutions to unlock the future of building, build relationships and see outcomes on a global scale. Check out our paper https://lnkd.in/ghekduR2. 𝐓𝐢𝐭𝐥𝐞: 𝑉𝑖𝑡𝑟𝑢𝑣𝑖𝑜: Conditional Variational AutoEncoder (CVAE) to generate building meshes via single perspective sketches 🏗️ 𝐀𝐛𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭: At the beginning of a project, architects convey design ideas via quick 2D diagrams, front views, floor plans, and sketches. Consequently, many stakeholders have difficulty visualizing the 3D representation of the building mass, leading to varied interpretations thus inhibiting a shared understanding of the design. To alleviate the challenge, this paper proposes a deep learning-based method, 𝑉𝑖𝑡𝑟𝑢𝑣𝑖𝑜, for creating a 3D model from a single perspective sketch... 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬: • This research investigates the effect that the 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 has on the reconstruction quality, discovering that 𝑉𝑖𝑡𝑟𝑢𝑣𝑖𝑜 can capture fine-grain details in complex buildings when their native orientation is preserved during training, as opposed to processing canonical pose datasets or using SE(3) or SO(3)-equivariant architectures. • We introduce a fast and scalable conditional-variation autoencoder (CVAE) for single perspective sketch-to-3D building meshes (.usd) applications in the AEC industry. 𝐋𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: Please note that the results are still dependent on the view and style. For more details, refer to the supplementary material. 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: Test on a larger dataset of buildings and gather authentic sketches from professional designers.
