🐾🌿 Joining Hands for Animal Welfare and Wetland Conservation WWF-Hong Kong is thrilled to join hands with the CityUHK Centre for Animal Health and Welfare (CAHW), in the Veterinary Community Outreach Programme (#VCOP) to enhance the welfare of village dogs and cats near #MaiPoNatureReserve while safeguarding the rich biodiversity of this vital wetland. Under this collaboration, veterinary students, guided by registered veterinarians, deliver veterinary care to village pets, promote responsible pet ownership, and help prevent disease transmission between domestic animals and wildlife. These efforts create a harmonious balance between animal welfare and nature conservation. In January 2025, we successfully organised a community pet clinic service in Mai Po for 33 village dogs and cats, engaging 14 households in the process. This event highlighted the positive impact of collaboration in fostering coexistence between people, pets, and wildlife. Prof. Vanessa Barrs joined a research collaboration led by our Distinguished Visiting Professor Domenico Otranto on the prevalence of 𝘋𝘪𝘳𝘰𝘧𝘪𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘪𝘮𝘮𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘴 and 𝘋𝘪𝘳𝘰𝘧𝘪𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘴 in cats across the Mediterranean Basin. This study, involving data from six countries, examines the risk factors and clinicopathological abnormalities associated with these infections. The findings highlight the importance of strategic chemoprophylactic treatments for cats in areas where these infections are common. In Hong Kong, many dogs are loosely owned, often cared for by construction sites or warehouses. Most of these dogs are mongrels, and they often struggle to survive in challenging conditions. Birth control is key to reducing the population of stray and loosely-owned animals. Through our Mongrel Desexing Programme, the SPCA has been working tirelessly to make a difference. We provide free desexing services for mongrel dogs, focusing on those roaming freely in construction sites and villages. In the past 12 years, we’ve successfully desexed over 21,000 dogs free of charge. We also offer free rabies vaccinations, microchipping and dog licensing to promote responsible ownership.
