European Open Science Cloud for Cancer: A European-wide foundation to accelerate Data-driven Cancer Research. EU project
About us
EOSC4Cancer will make diverse types of cancer data accessible: genomics, imaging, medical, clinical, environmental and socio-economic. It will use and enhance federated and interoperable systems for securely identifying, sharing, processing and reusing FAIR data across borders and offer them via community-driven analysis environments. EOSC4Cancer’s well curated data sets will be essential input for reproducible and robust analytics and computational methods - including machine learning and artificial intelligence. EOSC4Cancer’s five use-cases will cover the patient journey from cancer prevention over diagnosis to treatment, laying the foundation of data trajectories and workflows for future European Cancer Mission projects. EOSC4Cancer brings together a consortium of 29 organisations from 13 countries, including cancer research centres, research infrastructures, leading research groups, hospitals and supercomputing centres. To make the developments sustainable, EOSC4Cancer will leverage the partners’ research infrastructures partners and the EOSC ecosystem. It will also serve the European Cancer Mission, by engaging with large international coalitions (e.g. ICGC-Argo, GA4GH, 1+MG/B1MG, Cancer Core Europe, European Cancer Information System, European Network of Cancer Registries, Innovative Partnership for Action Against Cancer Joint Action) and patients/survivors associations.

Today is World Cancer Day, a reminder for all of us to raise awareness and encourage research for its prevention, detection, and treatment. We are celebrating by sharing insights from last week's European Data Health and Innovation Summit. EOSC4Cancer was proud to co-organise the European Health Data and Innovation Summit on January 30th in Warsaw, Poland. The event attracted ~350 in-person attendees and around 2250 online participants. It was organized in parallel sessions, in English or Polish, highlighting a variety of aspects concerning the digitalization of healthcare, Health Data Spaces, and the development of personalized medicine. Experts from the public sector, private sector, and European institutions and initiatives participated in the sessions. The symposium was organized in collaboration with the Polish Chamber of Physicians and Dentists (Naczelna Izba Lekarska), NIL IN - Sieć Lekarzy Innowatorów, TEHDAS2 joint action, Ministerstwo Zdrowia, EIT Health, and Okręgowa Izba Lekarska w Warszawie. EOSC4Cancer’s project coordinator, Salvador Capella Gutierrez, spoke in the high-level panel “Future outlook of EHDS and digital health in Europe” along with the other panelists – Artur Drobniak PhD MD (NIL), Mélodie Bernaux (European Commission), Myriam Fernández Martín, PhD, MSN, RN (Amazon Web Services), Jean-Marc BOUREZ (EIT Health) – and moderated by Artur Olesch. In collaboration with TEHDAS2, EOSC4Cancer hosted a workshop titled “European Health Data Space meets cancer data”, exploring how both parts can move closer. The workshop was moderated by Carola S. (empirica) and Jan-Willem Boiten (Lygature), with the participation of speakers Salvador Capella Gutierrez, Angelo Solimini (European Commission), Mélodie Bernaux, Nienke Schutte (Sciensano), Maciej Bobowicz (Medical University of Gdansk), Goretti Mallorqui (VHIO), and Wei Gu (Luxembourg National Data Service), all experts in the field of healthcare data and research. #EHDS is not another EU regulation; it’s an enabler of data-driven medicine. It’s also a test of whether #Europe can innovate instead of regulating. Today, I had an honest conversation with policymakers, industry, and academia on how to make #EHDS successful within four years. I’m optimistic after listening today to how some stakeholders are engaged in implementing #EHDS with TEHDAS2 joint action at the forefront of working for recommendations on data sharing. A big applause for the French, Finnish, and Polish Ministry of Health for bringing data sharing to the top of the political agenda. But I’m also worried because I’ve often heard how #GDPR or particular interests hamper data sharing. The geopolitical situation requires a new approach to data, which has become a joker card in the #AI game. The #Dragi report “The Future of European Competitiveness” was a wake-up call—we have to take it seriously to innovate and make Europe competitive as a digital economy. Europe must be more ambitious! I agree with Urszula Demkow, the undersecretary of state at the Polish Ministry of Health, who said that data is an essential resource for economic growth, competitiveness, innovation, and a healthy society. #EHDS is not a project that will grow in silo. It will impact the development of “made in Europe” AI solutions and - vice versa - it will be affected by digital investments and existing regulations like #GDPR. Here are just a few quotes from the debate “Future outlook of EHDS and digital health in Europe” organized within the Polish Presidency in the European Council: ✅ Artur Drobniak PhD MD, President of the Polish Medical Chamber in Warsaw: doctors still have hope for a change driver by digitalization, but we should take care it won’t be undermined by legislative regulations making data sharing harder ✅ Salvador Capella Gutierrez, Coordinator of the EOSC4Cancer: EHDS is a game-changer for cancer research ✅ Mélodie Bernaux, European Commission: I am confident that we—the European Commission and Member States—will be ready for the implementation in four years. ✅ Myriam Fernández Martín, PhD, MSN, RN, Head of Health Innovation for EMEA at Amazon Web Services (AWS): data sharing should be as easy and safe as how easy and secure withdrawing money in cash machines no matter where we are ✅ Jean-Marc BOUREZ, CEO of EIT Health: we need long-term and sustainable public-private relationships to create a digital-friendly ecosystem in Europe. I asked straightforward questions that I’m often asked in talks, and I got honest answers. If all stakeholders in healthcare cooperate and communicate with each other, as the stakeholders today on the stage did, in four years, we will celebrate the first outcomes of EHDS for patients, healthcare, science, policy, and industry. Thank you NIL IN - Sieć Lekarzy Innowatorów Polish Chamber of Physicians and Dentists (Naczelna Izba Lekarska) Łukasz Sosnowski for an invitation and a perfectly organized conference 🙏
