The Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative and our partners recently participated in a three-day summit hosted by the Gender Is My Agenda Campaign - GIMAC Network on advancing justice and reparations for women and girls on the African continent. Gender and environmental justice are inextricably related in Africa and beyond. “The world is shifting away from fossil fuels, and Zimbabwe must not be left behind,” says Manica Youth Assembly (MAYA) a local climate group who joined the global movement for a #FossilFuelTreaty in 2023. 🇿🇼 Zimbabwe, which relies on coal for 40% of its electricity, faces criticism for its lack of alignment with global climate commitments. As a signatory to the #ParisAgreement, the country’s government must prioritize a #JustTransition away from fossil fuels by creating new opportunities for workers in the green economy.
