End the era of coal, oil and gas. Fast. Fair. Forever. Endorse the call for negotiating a #FossilFuelTreaty today.

About us

Climate change, like nuclear weapons, is a major global threat. Bold and immediate action is needed to address the climate emergency. The main cause of the climate emergency is fossil fuels. Coal, oil and gas are responsible for almost 80% of all carbon dioxide emissions since the industrial revolution. Phasing-out fossil fuel production, and fast-tracking progress towards safer and more cost-effective solutions, will require unprecedented international cooperation in three main areas: 1. Non-Proliferation: Preventing the proliferation of coal, oil and gas by ending all new exploration and production. 2. Disarmament: Phasing-out existing stockpiles and production of fossil fuels in line with the 1.5C global climate goal. 3. A Peaceful Transition: Fast-tracking real solutions and a just transition for every worker, community and country. The world is beginning to recognize that unprecedented levels of international cooperation will be required to prevent the proliferation of fossil fuels, to phase-out existing stockpiles and infrastructure, and to fast-track a just and peaceful transition to safer and cleaner alternatives. Just as fifty years ago the world needed a treaty to defuse the threats posed by weapons of mass destruction, the world today needs a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty.

  • To fulfill the terms of the Paris Agreement, we need a Fossil Fuel Treaty 📢 COP29 has failed to deliver enough climate finance for small island and developing nations to adapt and protect themselves from climate change. The proposed fossil fuel treaty, currently championed by a growing bloc of 14 nations, would bypass the consensus model, allowing it to overcome opposition and deliver real solutions. A treaty framework would also help address the challenges to access finance and to catalyse international financing for a just transition, including through potential debt financial mechanisms. • ⚠️ “This is the most important COP. If we miss it now, we are all going to be doomed.” At #COP29, developed countries have failed to put a climate finance number on the table after 3 years of talks, 14 meetings, and 10+ days of negotiations. Now, they want to squeeze this critical conversation into the last 24 to 36 hours—a shocking display of bad faith that puts millions in vulnerable nations at risk. Harjeet Singh, Global Engagement Director for the #FossilFuelTreaty Initiative called it out: “It is outrageous to see that developed countries have not even put a number on the table yet. While the draft text acknowledges that the needs are already running into trillions of dollars annually, yet developed countries have not mentioned how big the goal is going to be.” This failure is catastrophic: 🌡️ Mitigation ambition is missing from the text. 💧 Adaptation needs are skyrocketing, yet grants remain vague. 🏚️ Loss and damage costs are in the billions annually, but the text offers empty promises. Developed nations must act boldly and urgently by committing trillions of dollars in grant-based finance. Anything less condemns vulnerable communities to further suffering and pushes the world closer to climate catastrophe.

  • ✨ To everyone who joined us at our strategy brunch and network reception this weekend—thank you for your energy, your ideas, and your unwavering commitment to change. ✨ This weekend, we came together to chart the course for the #FossilFuelTreaty Initiative in 2025. We mapped bold steps on every front: 🌍 Amplifying campaigns and communications to rally a global movement. 🏛️ Building political pathways to secure key resolutions at the UN and beyond. 🤝 Expanding networks and partnerships to strengthen our collective power. 📚 Advancing cutting-edge research to guide the transition to a fossil-free future. 💬 Securing new endorsements—from governments to financial institutions—to grow our momentum. As #COP29 enters its final stretch, we honor the relentless advocates holding the line for an outcome that meets the moment— trillions in public finance to fund adaptation, mitigation, loss and damage, and a just transition. This is a pivotal week, and the stakes couldn't be higher. Together, we are building a movement that will rise above the odds and demand nothing less than the future our planet needs. 💚 The work is far from over, but with all of us united, change is inevitable. Let's make it happen. 💪

With its 311 municipalities and 5.7 million residents, Barcelona’s endorsement strengthens the call for better local funding and bold climate leadership. 💪 Together, we can drive the shift toward a #FossilFreeFuture. There are people around the world being harmed today by climate change and fossil fuels, particularly in the Global South where countries least responsible for creating the problem are paying the highest price.”  – Kumi Naidoo, President of Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative Read more about our efforts on the WINDWARD FUND blog. 🔗 Link in comments below.
