“I don’t know what I would be doing right now if the library wasn’t here…” Pew examined capital investments from FY11-FY22 that impacted neighborhoods and facilities across the city, including Logan Library in Philadelphia. Because of that investment, the surrounding neighborhood has a well-maintained space to learn, convene, and utilize critical resources. Traditionally, libraries offer book and media borrowing, research assistance, computer and internet access, and a quiet space to learn. But they can also offer job hunting assistance, language learning resources, a place for kids to gather after school. At Logan Library in Philadelphia, they even offered sewing lessons and a fashion show. These resources are possible because of investments made by Philly’s local government, creating space for everybody in the neighborhood. Parks, playgrounds, rec centers, and libraries are critical public spaces in cities. They are built and maintained by the local government through capital investments. And the equitable spending of those dollars means that more neighborhoods and communities benefit.
