The Bipartisan Policy Center’s Anand Parekh , The STOP Obesity Alliance’s William Dietz, and Obesity Action Coalition’s Joe Nadglowski joined together to write a powerful piece for STAT News on why the #Medicare prohibition on covering weight loss drugs is discriminatory and outdated—and why expanding access would be a sound health care decision for both the health care system and, more importantly, for individual Americans struggling with this chronic disease. “The government will foot the health care bill for older Americans in one form or another. A former schoolteacher and resident of the Dominican Republic, Santiago, 54, was diagnosed with primary sclerosing cholangitis (#PSC), a disease of the #bileducts that causes #inflammation and #scarring and can block the drainage of damaging fluid from the #liver. She stopped teaching after the initial diagnosis and focused on raising her 24 year old daughter, Aimee Gonzalez. As the damage built up over time, the abdominal pain became unbearable at times. Due to the #cirrhosis occurring in her liver, she was told her best option was a #transplant. “PSC damages the bile ducts and leads to liver scarring over time,” said AnnMarie Liapakis, MD, medical director of the Living Donor Liver Transplant Program. “Beyond the pain, people suffering with PSC may have complications of #liverfailure, bile duct infections, and have a high risk of #cancer, but unfortunately, not all #patients are able to access a deceased-donor transplant in time due to the organ shortage. That’s why living donor liver transplant is an option we encourage people with this debilitating and life-threatening condition to explore.” Gonzalez, who along with other family members was tested as a potential organ donor, turned out to be a perfect match. Dr. Michael Broeker, a family physician, donated a portion of his #liver in a non-directed organ donation with another liver #donor. Broeker says he was first made aware of the possibility of becoming a living liver donor after watching a FOX 9 story on Ted Garding in February 2022. Garding had also donated one of his kidneys in a non-directed donation and felt so positive about the outcome of impacting another life, he then explored becoming a living liver donor as well. "That was the first time I actually became aware of living liver donation even as a thing," Dr. Broeker recalled after seeing the story. Broeker’s liver donation was part of Mayo Clinic’s first paired liver donation chain. Paired exchanges are now very common in #kidneytransplants at Mayo and other transplant centers around the world. A paired exchange happens when a family member is not a perfect organ donation for their loved one, but may be a match for someone else needing a #transplant. "And if they’re a good donor, despite that incompatibility, we can find another recipient who can use that piece of the liver and that second recipient’s donor who may not be a match for that recipient, may actually donate to the initial person," says Dr. Timucin Taner, a #livertransplant surgeon at Mayo Clinic. After this surgery, the two recipients and the donors made full recoveries. Dr. Broeker, who trains for marathons, is even back to running again.
