Tong Xia earned his master’s degree in engineering from the University of New Mexico and began his career as a PV system designer in New Jersey before becoming a PV system engineer. He was then subsequently promoted to the Director of Engineering at an EPC in New York. Following his employment in New York, he was hired as a Senior Project Engineer at ONYX Renewable Partners. Tong gained valuable management and design skills there, which helped propel him into his current leadership position. He has been with GS Power Partners since 2019; he currently manages the engineering division and oversees the technical portion of the pre-construction department. He plays a pivotal role in supporting the development, due diligence, underwriting, and construction teams. Tong remarks, “My engineering education set the foundation and helped me get involved in the industry. I have always believed that character and personality matter more than knowledge. Education and training may help progress a career faster, but with the right mindset, no matter what level of education an individual has received, there are endless opportunities.” Tong maintains that his career has been molded significantly by the realization that the role of engineering goes beyond virtual modeling. Additionally, he believes that technology must be truly implementable and the solution must be viable for other technicians. Tong explains, “Design can be easy from the standpoint of sitting behind a screen and moving your mouse, but the real question is if the plan will work. Knowing the pain points of installers, electricians, and project managers has shaped my approach in the engineering field.” Tong thrives in the fast-paced, flexible work environment at GS Power Partners, where adaptability and teamwork are key. He says, “It is a team that feels like a family.” While serving as the main point of contact for module procurement, electrical equipment, and extended lead time materials, he engages with a diverse range of colleagues. His problem-solving abilities ensure daily optimal performance. Although Tong is passionate about the #renewableenergy industry, he is also intrigued by the mysteries of the universe, including physics, black holes, and even the possibility of aliens!
