The current system is failing our veterans - it's time for a new approach.

About us

Heroes and Horses is an innovative nonprofit based out of the Gallatin Valley. Our mission at Heroes and Horses is to offer combat veterans an alternative solution for defining and approaching their physical and mental scars—a solution that does not include prescription medications, or traditional psychotherapy, but rather the opportunity to use tools to redefine their purpose, rediscover their inner strength, and maximize their potential by taking ownership of their lives for the first time since leaving service.

  • Last weekend was truly an incredible event. I saw many faces that I had not seen in years, as well as many new friends, graduates, and anchor donors who have been unwavering supporters of the iterations over all the years in the 10-year growth cycle of HH. I was humbled and grateful for the outpouring of love at the event. The venue donated by Brian Stock and the musical guests, which he has done over the past three years, allowed us to settle into a familiar atmosphere that feels like home. This year, we decided to set no expectations, no goals, and no benchmarks. We must fully trust that purpose makes room for us in life. Our only aim was to bring to life the true power of healing that the HH program has brought to people worldwide. So, whether it was 1 dollar or 1 million dollars, our focus was authenticity, love, and connection. Bringing people together in a room who may not know one another but share a common thread is powerful. At its core, it’s a simple belief that we can do something to stop the chaos and get off the wheel of madness that has taken so many lives, eroded a generation, and negatively affected the next. What brought us all together cannot be seen with our eyes; we can only feel it. This feeling acts as an invisible force aligning for an incredible night and the rise of the very thing we now see. The rest hits all by itself. I am grateful for what the past 10 years have brought and who it has brought into our lives. Thank you so much for being part of it. #heroesandhorses #veteranshelpingveterans #gratitude

This past weekend, I had the privilege of photographing the Heroes and Horses 10-year anniversary Gala in Bozeman, Montana—a night that will leave a lasting impact on me. Heroes and Horses is a remarkable organization that runs a life-changing 41-day off-grid program, designed to help veterans heal and find purpose through rigorous outdoor challenges such as hot and cold therapy, meditation, and of course the bond between human and horse. I was fortunate enough to get an in depth breakdown of the program by William Wendelman after he went through the course earlier this summer. However, hearing the testimonials that night, I was struck by just how transformative this program is. We witnessed incredible stories of growth, resilience, and healing, alongside amazing auction moments and heartfelt speeches—all capped off by a performance from country star Craig Morgan. One of the most special moments for me was seeing my close friend and H&H's very own Marketing Director, William Wendelman, involved with such a powerful organization. I’ve been fortunate enough to advise Will on his career path in recent years, and to see him thriving in this role truly fills my heart. Now, Will is probably going to hate me for this, but he’s always been pretty introverted since I’ve known him. To witness him on this night, confidently conversing with people from all walks of life and even getting up on stage to give a short speech, was a powerful and unforgettable moment for me. It was an unforgettable night celebrating an organization that’s making a profound difference in the lives of our veterans. Thanks for letting me be a part of it William and team. #veteranshelpingveterans #heroesandhorses #equinetherapy

  • As we conlcude another season, we take a moment to reflect on the transformative journey our participants have undertaken. Each narrative illustrates that change is not merely a destination, but a profound evolution rooted in self discovery and hope. Just as climbing the mountain offers new perspectives, so does the journey into one’s self. With the closing of the 2024 season, we complete a decade of service. Each year holding its own challenges and victories, all leading to where we are today. Thank you to the men who made the choice to change, and thank you to the staff who works tirelessly to help facilitate that change. Lastly thank you to everyone who has supported us and been there through this journey. As we turn the page to the future, we are filled with hope and excitement for the possibilities ahead. We are just getting started! #veteranshelpingveterans #dohardthings #gratitude

  • 41 days. A blink of an eye really, however when you live a lifetime in 41 days ones perspective tends to change. Within the first week of the Heroes & Horses program the noise of the world fades and you’re left with two things, the task of the day and your own thoughts. It’s here the change begins. There’s nothing to distract you or allow for an escape and you’re forced to look at yourself. I graduated class one this year just a few days ago and the lessons I’m unpacking of my experience have just started revealing themselves. I can definitively say I’ll never be the same. I’m William Wendelman former Marine and program graduate. I’ve been with Heroes and Horses since January as the Director of Marketing, being fortunate enough to help tell the story as it unfolds. Now I’m part of that story and have a better perspective of its impact on those who attend. I can’t wait to start sharing.
