The Drylands Summer School – by the Centre for Research and Development in Drylands (CRDD), the Jameel Observatory for Food Security Early Action and partners – is taking place at Camp Simpirre in Isiolo, Kenya. Congratulations to everyone involved! Keynote presentations were delivered by Gufu Oba, professor emeritus of NMBU - Norwegian University of Life Sciences and director of the Gaadisa Gummi Foundation, and Ian Scoones, professorial fellow at the Institute of Development Studies and leader of the erstwhile PASTRES project. Congratulations to the CRDD's and the Jameel Observatory's partners in this year's edition – the Feinstein International Center at Tufts University, the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) – to all those involved in the school, including Guyo Malicha Roba, Ph.D., Peter Ballantyne, Hussein Tadicha Wario, PhD, Elizabeth Stites, Hassan Roba, Rahma Hassan, JACKSON WACHIRA and many more.

I am happy to be part of the researchers who have convened at Camp Simpirre in Isiolo rangelands for the #DrylandsSummerSchool2025. The key highlight that resonates with my research goal on climate change policy narratives is that pastoralism is a viable production system and that policy narratives that paint pastoralism as an updated production system that needs to be changed impede adaptation efforts. Consequently, interventions are usually based on intervening to change pastoral systems rather than building on the trading and and local resilience frameworks. policy actors and solutions should understand how pastoral systems work and innovations be based on adapting to the pastoral system itself using a bottom - up framework.

We at the Drylands Learning and Capacity Building Initiatives (DLCI)—www.dlci-hoa.org—had the rare opportunity to participate in the 25th Global International Funders (IFIP) for Indigenous Peoples conference, which was held in Naivasha, Kenya. This is the first such IFIP conference to be held on African soil. Networking and interacting in an open space with donors, mainly from various philanthropic foundations worldwide, was fascinating. Seed4Range Transforming Rangelands for Resilient Livelihoods For the past three years, CRDD has through support from Biovision Foundation under the Seed4Range project been working with communities in Marsabit county to improve fodder production, rangeland management, and livestock resilience. Through a combination of technical support, indigenous grass restoration, and knowledge-sharing, the project has empowered 1,427 households to adopt sustainable fodder production practices. Key Achievements at a Glance ✔ 35,704 hay bales harvested across project sites ✔ 5,268 kg of indigenous grass seeds collected ✔ 1,427 households adopted improved fodder production (1,052 female-led, 375 male-led) ✔ Strong women’s leadership—over 70% of beneficiaries are women, enhancing resilience and economic empowerment in rangeland management Impact in Saku In Saku, a total of 1,029 households (729 women, 300 men) adopted improved fodder techniques, leading to: ✅ 18,132 hay bales harvested ✅ 3,961 kg of fodder seeds collected 📺 Watch the Saku Community Experience Documentary https://lnkd.in/dFg7ij-S Impact in Sololo In Sololo, 380 households (315 women, 65 men) joined the movement, achieving: ✅ 16,847 hay bales harvested ✅ 1,069 kg of fodder seeds produced 📺 Watch the Sololo Community Documentary https://lnkd.in/dY3CEArE By enhancing fodder production, storage, and community-led learning, Seed4Range is reducing reliance on external feed sources and strengthening local economies. It’s widely recognised that pastoral development is limited by a poor understanding of pastoralism. And the knowledge about pastoralism is entangled in misunderstanding and debate. IIED’s massive open online course (MOOC) on pastoralism in development provides an entry point for understanding pastoralism and is a valuable tool for navigating the available knowledge. A tutor guided edition of the MOOC will run from 10 March 2025 for five weeks. A global team of tutors with expertise in pastoralism will provide guidance, advice and facilitated interactive group discussions. There will also be regular Zoom meetings to review and discuss the course material, plus occasional meetings on specific topics of interest. The MOOC is being run in partnership with Misereor and the Global Alliance for the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP2026). Come join us this March on an exciting online learning journey on the topic of Pastoralism in Development. International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), in partnership with Misereor and the #Global Alliance for the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP2026), will be running a free, tutor-guided MOOC open to the general public, beginning on 10 March, 2025. The MOOC provides fresh insights into pastoralism and will be useful for anyone wanting to critically assess commonly held views and narratives in development. The course will run for five weeks featuring time for networking and community-building among participants, with a Zoom call on the Monday of each week (starting 10 March) and a final Zoom call at the end of the fifth week. While the MOOC is running, we will also run a series of parallel lectures/panel talks on hot topics that have been raised by the working groups of the IYRP.
