We are thrilled to announced the publication of UNCONQUERED STATES (Oxford University Press), co-edited by David Motadel. In the heyday of empire, most of the world was ruled, directly or indirectly, by the European powers. The book explores the ways in which non-European powers such as China, Ethiopia, Japan, the Ottoman Empire, Persia, and Siam managed to keep European imperialism at bay. Join the book launches in Honolulu (Wednesday, 28 February 2025, 5pm, Imin Conference Center, University of Hawai'i) and London (LSE, tba) later this year. #books #history #europe #history #LSE https://lnkd.in/eZePRtZZ?

I’ve been involved in a ton of things this year which may account for how bloomin’ fast it has gone! Ongoing it’s the special issue of JLDHE that is proving most interesting and rewarding but I’d say this project- the manifesto for the essay in the age of AI- has been the most stimulating and satisfying project that feels ‘complete’. Of course everything rolls on in different ways but the output has been so well received and feels rounded and complete. Bringing colleagues from four institutions together; working closely with Claire Gordon PFHEA and the actual utility of it as a positive rather than panicked response to the ever increasing intrusiveness of generative AI is what sets it apart in my mind. Anyway, for those taking a break: have an excellent one and if you’re working or volunteering or holidays don’t feel like a break I send you extra warm wishes and care. See you- ceteris paribus- in the new year!
