Creating a thriving and diverse Marine Energy sector in Wales
About us
Marine Energy Wales brings together technology developers, the supply chain, academia and the public sector to establish Wales as a global leader in sustainable marine energy generation, making a significant contribution to a low carbon economy. The benefits of this industry are being felt throughout the country with the creation of green sustainable jobs, growth and skills providing significant development opportunities for Wales. Marine Energy Wales is an initiative set up and managed by Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum and was based on the original Marine Energy Pembrokeshire model due to demand for this to be rolled out onto a pan Wales platform. Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum is a Community Interest Company that works to protect and enhance the coastal and marine environment for current and future generations. Marine Energy Wales was established in 2016 and works to build a positive and unique collaboration between industry, government and academia.

CELTIC SEA REGION A joint report by Marine Energy Wales (MEW), Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (OREC), and Celtic Sea Power (CSP), is urging decision-makers to recognise the existing capabilities of the Celtic Sea region when it comes to supporting the UK’s future floating offshore wind industry and net zero targets. Offering a new perspective from a regional lens, the report highlights areas where progress is already being made, and areas with existing potential to support the burgeoning renewables industry #CeticSeaRegion #CelticSeaCluster #Renewables https://lnkd.in/eR_YjKm6

Tugdock's Submersible Platform (TSP) can be used to support floating wind turbines weighing up to 20,000 tonnes, to facilitate offshore oil platform decommissioning projects and even aerospace operations. The company's Chief Technology Officer said this latest endorsement is testament to the rigorous engineering and testing behind the technology. https://lnkd.in/ecpcDxaF

Could low-carbon concrete be a viable option for tidal lagoons, floating wind platforms and port and coastal infrastructure in the future? Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd researchers tested over 100 samples at META’s Quay 1 site in Pembroke Dock, exposing them to salty water, wet-dry cycles, and real-sea conditions. Unlike lab tests, this experiment revealed how the material performs in the harshest environments. The results? Slightly weaker, but less prone to shrinkage and far more watertight. We spoke with Dr. Riccardo Maddalena to explore what this means for the future of sustainable construction. Ahmad A. Reza Ahmadian Read the interview in full 🔗: https://lnkd.in/eKcrm5AD

The UK Parliament today debated how to harness renewable energy in the Celtic Sea with floating wind turbines and investments in ports. The debate follows the release of a report titled An Enhanced Vision for the Celtic Sea co-authored by Marine Energy Wales (MEW), Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (OREC) and Celtic Sea Power (CSP). MEW, OREC and CSP are spearheading regional activity to prepare for FLOW in the Celtic Sea. The three organisations are founding members of the Celtic Sea Cluster which works to provide a regional voice, drive economic prosperity and champion local supply chain. The report states that ‘the manufacture of floating foundations and associated substructures presents a significant opportunity for the Celtic Sea region. With no established global supply chain, this market gap can be effectively filled with strategic investment. The Celtic Sea region is well-positioned to service the growing domestic market as the FLOW pipeline develops, and to capture a share of the Irish, French, and other nearby European markets, leveraging its strategic geographic location and its existing offshore renewables cluster, supported by regional universities with world-leading offshore renewable Research & Development (R&D) capabilities.’ I hope Irish policymakers and stakeholders will now follow suit ASAP and put a plan in place and a public-private partnership together to build what is required to harness renewable energy in the Celtic Sea in partnership with our neighbours on the other side of the sea. This was a really useful collaborative exercise which looked at the excellent publications "Celtic Sea Blueprint" and "Industry Growth Plan" through a regional, "bottom-up", prism. Celtic Sea Power, Marine Energy Wales, Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult
A "boots-on-the-ground" perspective is vital for something as big as #FloatingWind in the #CelticSea. Deep knowledge of local strengths and ambitions spurred this document to be co-authored by Marine Energy Wales, Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult and Celtic Sea Power. It can be read as a companion piece to the Celtic Sea #Blueprint and the offshore wind #IndustrialGrowthPlan - to help join up national and regional perspectives. Common aims are clear; to support the drive for renewable energy and ensure benefits are in lock-step with delivery.
