What a project – and what a video! This summer we headed to Methil in Fife to deliver this river restoration project for Fife Council and Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA). The project, located on the River Leven and designed by cbec eco-engineering UK & Europe, included the construction of a rock ramp, the removal of a redundant weir and other habitat improvement and wetland planting works. The rock ramp construction required the meticulous cleaning of several thousand tons of imported stone, and the careful placing of this to deliver the completed product. The river bed was naturalised with a lining of site won screened and washed rounded cobbles and gravels, and the surrounding area reinstated with topsoil and coir and seeded with a native riverbank seed mix. The weir removal at Burn Mill entailed the systematic dismantling of the structure and grading of the river bed and banks, and was “live streamed” for Dam Removal Europe! Several thousand wetland plants were carefully planted in the margins of the wetland scrapes, and rock rolls and pre-planted coir rolls were used to create riparian habitat. The resounding positive feedback from stakeholders is a testament to our site team’s dedication, professionalism and attention to detail. A big thank you to all of our suppliers who provided excellent service: Skene Group Construction Services Limited, Safer Group, Salix River and Wetland, GORDON BOW PLANT HIRE LTDGAP Group Limited, Forth Rivers Consulting, BASE-UK Biodiversity Agriculture Soil EnvironmentJDP SCOTLAND: The Big Picture, and Binn Group. A big thank you too to James Shooter for the work in preparing this film.

What a year! 2024 has been our busiest yet at McGowan Environmental and the scope, diversity and scale of projects we work on continues to expand. We have delivered peatland restoration in the Scottish Highlands, footpaths on Ireland's stunning north west coast, and river restoration in urban centres this year. Our site teams have grown and developed side by side with these projects. Young people have completed apprenticeships, and training and upskilling continues apace throughout the workforce. This selection of photos from 2024 show some of the skilled people who deliver this work, the equipment we use and the landscapes we work in. For everyone we have worked with this year - it has been a pleasure. We look forward to more good things in 2025! With thanks as always to our in house photographer Gregor Allison for some of these brilliant images, and thanks to James Shooter for both photo and video content throughout the year 🙏

We recently completed river restoration works on the Allt a’Mharcaidh River in the Cairngorms turning a watercourse, which had been historically straightened for floating logs, into the meandering waterway captured in this fantastic film courtesy of James Shooter and SCOTLAND: The Big Picture. Now restored to its historic route, we installed a number of large wood structures in the river to encourage deposition of sediment and raise the river bed. Huge credit goes to our skilled delivery team and to EnviroCentre for the project design. It's always a pleasure working with RSPB, Cairngorms Connect and Forestry and Land Scotland 🤝 On to the next river restoration...!

  • We’re delighted to announce that leading energy engineering solutions provider BRUSH Group has acquired a majority stake in McGowan Group. The deal sees McGowan – a National Electricity Registration Scheme (NERS) accredited Independent Connection Provider (ICP) – become a key part of BRUSH Engineering Solutions, a leader in turnkey solutions to the UK’s power distribution network. McGowan Group companies include McGowan Infrastructure, McGowan Environmental Ltd. and Eco Cable Protect UK. Speaking about the investment, Nicolas Pitrat, CEO of BRUSH Group, said: “This is an exciting deal for both BRUSH and McGowan, creating significant growth opportunities both north and south of the border. There are strong synergies between our two businesses and McGowan’s impressive environmental credentials add a new dimension to our engineering capabilities. What’s more, their exclusive Eco Cable Protect business gives BRUSH customers a lower cost, lower carbon alternative protection system for cable and pipe laying projects across the UK." Ross McGowan of McGowan Group who founded the business in 2009 and continues as Managing Director alongside the existing management team, said: “Becoming part of BRUSH Group is an exciting new chapter in our story and we’re looking forward to working with the team at BRUSH to apply our approach to working in the natural environment to a broader range of customers as we support the growth of the business across the UK.” Full story 👉 https://lnkd.in/exKBX-dy
