  • Neuroimmune Foundation organized a meeting with AAP 2+ years ago with several of the top experts in PANS/PANDAS. The engagement was limited - far too limited to be in agreement that the AAP truly engaged experts in the field. This official statement is too cautious and as the leader in guidelines for pediatricians nationwide, there should have been a greater effort and emphasis on continuing to engage the researchers and experts in the field in the dialogue that was offered many times. Particularly stunning is the suggestion 10 days of amoxicillin is sufficient for GAS despite the widely reported 35% failure rate. Nevertheless, some small progress that the diagnosis itself is validated and, "While evidence is sparse regarding the causes and treatment of PANS, the symptoms and severity of the condition are very real and painful for families seeking care."

AAP brought together experts to review the existing research related to PANS and issue a new clinical report with recommendations for clinicians and families. While evidence is sparse regarding the causes and treatment of PANS, the symptoms and severity of the condition are very real and painful for families seeking care. The new guidelines urge clinicians to take a deliberate and cautious approach and partner with parents and subspecialists. Learn more in AAP News: https://lnkd.in/eg9hiqgs

  • Great work by Stanford. Huge progress has been made. “Is PANS…” in the title of any major medical publication used to end with something like “real?” Now a relevant question that will positively impact patient care is being asked and answered. https://lnkd.in/e_7thJjr

  • I am so thrilled to announce the launch of our exciting new program - a weekly, free, CME-accredited, comprehensive educational series and mentorship created in collaboration with Project ECHO®. The launch of this program represents a significant shift towards better care for patients and families trudging through the misery of immune-mediated and inflammation driven psychiatric deteriorations who are seeking compassionate medical care and relief from suffering, and we are elated to share the details with you! Starting in January, physicians worldwide who want to improve their ability to care for people with PANS, autoimmune encephalitis, and related autoimmune and inflammatory conditions that present with psychiatric symptoms will be welcome to join us each week to learn from world-renowned experts in the field and from each other (space is limited and application is required). Project ECHO® is a highly regarded and internationally recognized platform with over 1 million learners in 45+ countries. It is a collaborative model of medical education and care management that helps clinicians provide expert-level care to patients. Using video-conferencing to train, advise, and support primary care providers and specialists, Project ECHO® increases access to specialty treatment for various conditions—now, to include psychiatric presentations with a neuroimmune basis! Project ECHO® has been strikingly effective, which has been shown in dozens of studies. A JAMA study found that patients with hepatitis C who received care under the model had similar outcomes to those who received care in academic medical centers. Community physicians are being trained to treat complex conditions, thanks to weekly ongoing mentorship using the ECHO model. We have three short videos on our website that are worth watching, and I think you'll share our excitement if you watch them. I sincerely believe the launch of Neuroimmune’s ECHO represents the ever-brightening light at the end of the tunnel for our community that has suffered so much not only from the actual symptoms but from lack of access to physicians educated on these conditions. We want to take a moment to express our deep gratitude to each of you who have supported our work over time. Your donations, volunteering, and sharing of our programs have been instrumental to our work and we look forward to continuing to change the neuroimmune landscape with you. neuroimmune.org/echo #cme #projectecho ~Anna Conkey, Founder and Director, Neuroimmune Foundation
