The roar of helicopters overhead and the dense, humid air of Vietnam was a far cry from the classrooms of the University of North Carolina, where Paige Dempsey had studied French and Spanish. Yet, in 1970, Paige found herself in the heart of a war zone, armed not with weapons but with creativity, resilience, and a canvas bag full of props. The safety of civilians is vital during conflicts and other emergencies. Yet humanitarians, who are civilians helping civilians, are facing escalating violence across the globe. Since the beginning of this year, 32 Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers and staff have tragically died or been killed while helping others. We are joining the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC and others to stand in solidarity with the families and colleagues of those who lost their lives. This week, Red Crossers came together for a moment of silence to honor our colleagues who have passed away this year. Violence against humanitarian workers must stop. #ProtectHumanity

Today, on International Volunteer Day, we honor the extraordinary humanitarians who have tragically lost their lives in the line of duty. In 2024 alone, we mourn the loss of 28 selfless volunteers. These are not just numbers—they are our colleagues, friends, and heroes who faced unimaginable risks to bring hope and relief to those in need. From the frontlines of conflict and violence to the heart of pandemics and natural disasters, their courage and commitment were boundless. They gave everything to make the world a better place, and their legacy inspires us to carry their mission forward. Today, we remember them with gratitude and reverence.
