What if young people could learn like it was 2040, now? At reDesign, we spend A LOT of time working on the design of tools and resources that bridge the present and the future learning demands, for young people and educators. We explored this head-on with our session at the Aurora Institute Symposium, “A Roadmap to Future Readiness: Making reDesign’s Future9 Competencies Your Own.” From aligning with educators' current practices to leveling up critical thinking and transdisciplinary skills, we showcased practical strategies to adapt or adopt these competencies. We also shared a comparative review of 14 leading skills frameworks, highlighting how the Future9 uniquely bridges subject-specific learning with broader skill development and identified: - Where Future9 aligns with existing practices to complement what educators are already doing. - Where it enhances current teaching and learning by fostering deeper thinking skills that transcend disciplines. Check out the crosswalk, shared at our Aurora Symposium presentation below 👇, and explore strategies to make these competencies your own. 🔗 Download our Aurora Symposium presentation https://lnkd.in/dpna8mmh 📰 Sign up for reDesign’s monthly newsletter. What if schools embraced the genius of learning ecosystems? This powerful roundup from Edutopia - George Lucas Educational Foundation (https://lnkd.in/gDrPnm74), shared by Babak Mostaghimi, Ed.L.D., MPP, reminds us that research is behind commitments to learning ecosystem development, even though the research into learning ecosystems is still relatively nascent. This round up points to some of the ways that learning thrives beyond the classroom walls and begs the question: how can we reimagine education to fully leverage communities, nature, and peer connections as part of a dynamic learning ecosystem? Imagine schools where students not only learn but also serve their communities, designing solutions to real-world challenges. Where science journaling in nature becomes as essential as any textbook. Where peer collaboration and mentorship are the norm, not the exception. The opportunity is here to tear down barriers and build bridges—to transform education into an ecosystem that nurtures curiosity, connection, and genius in every learner. Searching for Stars? Seth Godin recently reminded us of a powerful truth: talent isn’t something you’re born with or that gets “discovered” by a panel of judges. It’s persistence, skill, and a touch of luck over time. His examples? Legends like Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, and Usher—all rejected by Star Search. Their success wasn’t about being picked; it was about crafting their own stars. This idea resonates deeply with our vision for education. The future of learning doesn’t hinge on who “gets picked” by traditional systems but on empowering all learners to cultivate the skills and mindsets that make them thrive in an unpredictable world. In her thought-provoking Getting Smart article, Antonia Rudenstine asks the critical question: "What should young people get really good at?" She explores why rethinking education is urgent in this moment of rapid AI adoption and shifting workforce needs. One of her answers? We must prioritize future-ready competencies like creativity, problem-solving, and adaptability—the very skills our Future9 Competencies framework is designed to nurture. She also highlights a sobering study by George Land: 98% of 5-year-olds meet NASA’s definition of “genius,” but by adulthood, that number drops to just 2%. The culprit? Traditional education systems that undervalue curiosity, tinkering, and exploration. To turn the tide, we need to redesign education with four key foci: 1: Deep understanding of key concepts 2: Mastery of core thinking processes 3: Development of future-ready competencies 4: Engagement in meaningful, relevant projects This work isn’t about tweaking around the edges—it’s about imagining and building a future-ready, equity-grounded system that serves learners’ unique strengths while preparing them for the common good. Just as Seth reminds us that stars are made, not found, it’s time to shift our education systems from “picking winners” to designing environments where every learner can shine. Let’s discuss: How can we move from the echo chamber to actionable innovation? The work of the education departments KY and SC is so powerful. There's so much to learn from both state's approaches to honoring stakeholders, believing in communities, listening to educators. Stephanie DiStasio and David Cook's descriptions provide great insight. Check out their work.
In a groundbreaking effort, 40% of U.S. states are revisiting what it means to be a prepared graduate. Kentucky and South Carolina are at the forefront, each developing unique frameworks that clarify essential competencies for students' post-high school success. In a new Getting Smart Blog, David Cook and Stephanie DiStasio share insights from their pioneering work in these states. The United We Learn KY initiative emphasizes a bottom-up approach, empowering local communities to shape education policy and accountability systems. Meanwhile, South Carolina's "Profile of the South Carolina Graduate" focuses on collaboration with stakeholders to define and measure the skills essential for life and work. Both states highlight the importance of community collaboration and alignment with workforce needs in transforming education systems. 🌟 Wow, Day 3 at #AuroraSymposium24: A Day of Insight, Youth Voice, and Transformation! What an incredible lineup of thought-provoking dialogue and shared insights on shaping a more inclusive, future-focused education system. A few of the day's highlights: 🎙️ Morning Keynote - One Good Question with Youth Leaders Our day kicked off with an inspiring keynote that put youth voices front and center. Rhonda Broussard, Founder and CEO of Beloved Community, led the session with young leaders Samarah Bently, David Ramirez, and DeAnna Fair, who asked the powerful questions we *all* need to be asking: “Will you listen?” and “How can we better connect hands-on learning outside of school?” Each question challenged us to rethink our approach to youth engagement and equity. Audience members pushed further: "Is our system evolving fast enough to meet today’s world? How can we consistently build student-centered experiences that drive true success?" The collective call for change was resounding. 🔎 Community-Driven Transformation: Bullitt County’s Journey In an inspiring session on community-driven transformation, leaders from Bullitt County Schools—Superintendent Dr. Jesse Bacon, with David Cook and Adrienne Usher—shared how they are redefining accountability by focusing on community expectations. As Jesse noted, “Community-based accountability is about what our community expects from us and how we’re going to deliver on that.” Their co-created Profile of a Graduate and Apprenticeship Program illustrated how real change happens when all voices—parents, industry partners, educators—are actively involved. True collaboration = real investment and impact! ✨ reDesign's Pop-Up Demo: CBE Catalyst Antonia Rudenstine and the reDesign team had such a great time connecting with attendees at our pop-up demo on our brand new CBE Catalyst! What an inspiring day at the Aurora Institute 2024 Symposium, and an absolutely fire keynote luncheon on "Nothing About Us Without Us: A Conversation With Young People on Learner-Centered Education." Hearing directly from students was a powerful reminder of what learner-centered education really means. Moderated by Carlos R. Moreno of Big Picture Learning, we explored what happens when students become true partners in their learning. As Carlos put it, we need to be “unapologetically, relentlessly student-centered.” The students’ voices? Absolutely unforgettable: 🚀 “Education can free us or hold us down—learner-centered education is freedom.” 🔥 “It’s time for kids to control their own education. The choice lets us know who we are as learners.” 💪 “We are the future. We set the tone.” When asked what they’d tell the next U.S. president, the answer was clear: Center us. View us as humans, not as accessories to someone else's agenda. If we’re serious about transformative change in education, the path is obvious: include students as partners, not side notes. #Aurora2024 #LearnerCentered #StudentVoice #FutureOfLearning #EducationReform #EquityInEd
