🌊🐟 Good Catch! 🐟🌊 When Pete Kibel, a marine scientist, and his engineer brother Ben Kibel teamed up nearly 20 years ago to tackle the issue of bycatch in the fishing industry, they developed some truly life-saving solutions. Their UK company, Fishtek Marine, continues to bring forward revolutionary products that protect ocean life and promote sustainable fishing globally. 💡🌎 Fishtek has invented an acoustic pinger and a net light that alerts dolphins and turtles to the presence of gill nets in the water, preventing them from drowning.🐬 Another innovation, SharkGuard, is an induction charged, Electric Pulsed Device that repels sharks from baited hooks in pelagic longline fisheries targeting tuna. By keeping sharks and rays away from these hooks, SharkGuard reduces bycatch in longline fishing without affecting target catches like bluefin tuna. In June 2025, they'll test a new Induction Charged SharkGuard "bin" in a real commercial setting in New Caledonia.🦈 "It’s such an exciting time to be in this space," said Pete Kibel, Fishtek Manging Director and Co-Founder. "We're surrounded by some brilliant minds and as a team, we are all driven by the common goal of achieving conservation outcomes in new and innovative ways.” 🌟 In yet another shining example, Fishtek is working to perfect "scallop discos"—illuminated crab pots that attract scallops. The scallops are drawn to the light and jump into the nets, offering fishermen, marine managers, and consumers a low impact alternative to damaging dredge caught scallops. We're thrilled to see Fishtek Marine, a Schmidt Marine grantee, continue making waves with innovative solutions that benefit marine life and fishers alike. 🌊⚖️ #SustainableFishing #MarineConservation #OceanConservation #FishtekMarine #SchmidtMarine
