Following a summer vacation to the Caribbean, 39 year-old Adam developed a persistent stomachache upon returning to his home in New Jersey. After having multiple tests done with no clear answers, he insisted on a colonoscopy despite being below the recommended age of 45. “When the results came back, our world was turned upside down,” his younger sister, Jill says. Adam had stage IV colorectal cancer, which had already spread to his liver and lungs. Adam went through 11 months of treatments. "Those 11 months were filled with challenges, including Adam undergoing a life-or-death colostomy surgery that delayed the start of his chemotherapy by six weeks. He had to adjust to living with an ostomy bag indefinitely, which was a huge shock for him and all of us. Through it all, we rallied together as a family, doing everything we could to support him,” says his older sister, Holly. Sadly, Adam passed away in September 2023, less than a year after his diagnosis. In honor of their brother, Holly and Jill started a podcast and by sharing their story, they hope to “encourage others to advocate for their health, shed light on a global health issue that is claiming far too many lives too soon, and ultimately offer support to others who may also be grieving a loved one.” Holly and Jill’s advice to those who have lost loved ones to cancer is to keep celebrating their memory: “Don’t be afraid to talk about the person you’ve lost. Share their story with anyone who will listen—you never know whose life it might touch.” 💛 #StandUpToCancer

We were honored to hear from keynote speakers Dr. Trey Ideker of UC San Diego, Dr. Melissa Davis of Morehouse School of Medicine, Dr. Kevan Shokat of University of California, Berkeley, and Dr. Mark McClellan of Duke-Margolis Institute for Health Policy who each presented today at the virtual #StandUpToCancer Community Gathering. Topics included AI in cancer research, cancer inequities, the KRAS mutation, healthcare reform, and more. American Association for Cancer Research CEO Dr. Margaret Foti, SU2C co-founder Sherry Lansing, and SU2C Scientific Advisory Committee Chair Dr. William Nelson also spoke. A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for this event. Because of you, we are making substantial progress towards our mission. 🙌

Stand Up To Cancer invested early in immunotherapy research, enabling our research teams to pioneer successful new treatments for several common and deadly cancers. Our Community Gathering is a great reminder of the importance of collaboration and invigorates us for the year ahead. As SU2C President & CEO Dr. Julian Adams says, we are very hopeful in reaching our goal to reduce the number of cancer deaths and save more lives from this terrible disease. 💪
