Advancing #TrueCostAccounting (TCA) to reveal the hidden costs and benefits of food systems and improve health for all.
About us
The TCA Accelerator is a global network advocating for the transition to just, sustainable, and healthy food systems through widespread adoption of True Cost Accounting (TCA), a tool to make visible the hidden costs and benefits of food systems. Through strategic communications, stakeholder engagement, and innovative analysis, the TCA Accelerator raises awareness of food system externalities to inform private and public sector policy and practice and improve accountability. The TCA Accelerator is an Allied Initiative of the Global Alliance for the Future of Food.

Indian agriculture cannot succeed if soil health fails. India must consider #regenerativefarming as the way forward. We must evaluate and scale up #agroecological systems such as regenerative or #naturalfarming across India. The current regime of intensive agriculture - which relies heavily on chemical fertilisers that have led to the decline in soil health to alarming levels - is not an option. Sole reliance on such a wasteful, energy-intensive, fossil fuel-based agriculture system seriously risks India's food, nutritional and ecological security. We argue the case for India wide study to evaluate and adopt #regenerativefarming in The Indian Express article. Follow this initiative led by Dr Rajiv Kumar at Pahlé India Foundation (PIF). Reach out to know more about our project on evaluating #regenerativefarming across 15 Agro-climatic zones in India. The most comprehensive and India wide study to promote #naturebased #agroecological #climatereselient #netzero #smartagriculture #naturalfarming #regenerativefarming Stay tuned for more updates on this project and be part of this initiative in 2025! 🌍🌾 Changing the Way We Measure Success: Exploring True Cost Accounting (TCA) Food is expensive, but the price we see at the checkout doesn’t tell the whole story. Hidden costs—impacting our health systems, environment, water, soils, and the livelihoods of farmers—often remain unaccounted for. True Cost Accounting (TCA) seeks to change that. By measuring and accounting for these hidden costs, TCA offers profound insights that could drive much-needed reform in our food systems. December 2024, I had the privilege of joining a regional dialogue on TCA, co-led by Cerasela Stancu, Professor Harpinder Sandhu, and Rosanna Crawford, which aimed to strengthen ties between Australia and New Zealand to bring TCA to the forefront. Key Takeaways from the Dialogue: ✅ TCA’s transformative potential: Encourages a shift toward sustainable food production benefiting the environment, health, and society. ✅ Current challenges: Methodological complexities, policy alignment, and data gaps in implementing TCA effectively. ✅ Opportunities for collaboration: Aligning efforts between Australia and New Zealand to refine TCA frameworks and integrate them into policies. ✅ Recognizing cultural costs: Highlighting the importance of integrating indigenous knowledge into food system decision-making. ✅ The role of stakeholders: Policymakers, businesses, farmers, researchers, and consumers all have a role in driving TCA adoption. As we discussed pathways for action, I was inspired by the vision of a food system where all costs—environmental, social, and cultural—are accounted for. This isn’t mainstream—yet—but the momentum is growing. Let’s prioritize our contributions to this transformative journey and reimagine the way we value our food systems. Sharing a snapshot of the engaging session to mark this meaningful dialogue! 📸 #TrueCostAccounting #Sustainability #FoodSystems #Collaboration #FutureOfFood

“If we are able to show at the board and the company level, basically, the financial materiality of doing all of this, then we're good to go”. On November 26, we held our second Dialogue on True Cost Accounting and the Private Sector, part of our Scaling Implementation Dialogue Series. Our workshop participants spoke candidly on challenges to scaling TCA in the private sector, and identified tangible steps to catalyze change. 💡 Read the blog to explore the discussion further! We were delighted to host this Regional Dialogue with Harpinder Sandhu and Cerasela Stancu for Australia and New Zealand - part of our True Cost Accounting Dialogue Series and Summit. We are excited to see where this influential group of stakeholders go next - thank you all for attending. If you are interested in joining this working group and contributing to scaling implementation of TCA in Australia and New Zealand, please reach out to Harpinder and Cerasela.
Changing our measure of success 📈 Food is expensive, yet there are multiple hidden costs well beyond what we pay at the supermarket checkout. If we measure and account for the true cost of food production on our health system, our air, water, animals and soils, and the financial and social costs to our growers, farmers, taxpayers and consumers – what insight would that bring? What reform would that drive? This week, EnviroStrat Sustainability Director Cerasela Stancu co-led a webinar with Harpinder Sandhu of Federation University and Rosanna Crawford of TCA Accelerator which focused on strengthening ties between Australia and New Zealand to bring true cost accounting to the fore. True Cost Accounting (TCA) incentivises a shift to more sustainable forms of food production that benefits the environment and human health. It’s not a mainstream concept – yet. Alongside policymakers and business leaders, enablers include organic and regenerative farmers and growers, individuals and consumers. Investors & financial institutions can build on financing principles for food and land use, leveraging frameworks such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, climate disclosures and GHG emissions markets. The webinar drew wide interest with an initial focus for New Zealand on some pressing issues: regulatory changes to gene technology, land use transition, nature markets and climate and nature disclosures, access to data and the still-evolving methodologies of true cost accounting. As we develop and implement an action plan to bring true cost accounting to New Zealand and Australia, we left the webinar feeling emboldened. We discussed how to help governments, society and philanthropy magnify impact, and ways in which individuals, researchers and business leaders who share a belief in the importance of true cost accounting can prioritise their contributions. Contact Us for a recording of the webinar. Want to Join our Dialogue? We'd love you to leave your thoughts. 🍽️ The Cost of Poor Diets: A $8 Trillion Burden globally 🌍 Unhealthy dietary patterns are behind a staggering 70% of the $12 trillion of the hidden costs generated by global agrifood systems. These hidden health costs reveal themselves through reduced productivity due to illnesses and the heartbreaking toll of premature deaths caused by non-communicable diseases. #SOFA2024, using #TrueCostAccounting, uncovered a startling insight: half of these health hidden costs stem from just three dietary risks—diets low in whole grains, low in fruits, and high in salt.

On Wednesday 4th December, our Founder and CEO Pavan Sukhdev gave a keynote address at "Nature Data for Institutional Investors", hosted by ESG Investor. Titled "Myths and Realities", the address righted some common misconceptions at the intersection of nature and biodiversity and portfolio management. ⁉️ Myth 1: "We need much more data!" ✅ Reality: For action towards ‘Nature Positive’, businesses do not have to measure “everything, everywhere, all at once”. They should measure their biodiversity footprint using top-rated methodologies, and disclose following TNFD and other frameworks. ⁉️ Myth 2: “We (investors/investees) must track the extent and condition of ecosystems!” ✅ Reality: Corporations should be responsible for measuring their pressures on nature, much as national agencies (supported by UNEP-WCMC, IUCN, etc) are responsible for measuring the state of nature and publishing as National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs). Technology can be a powerful enabler to get high-quality NBSAPs published on time. ⁉️ Myth 3: “Proximity is the answer!” ✅ Reality: Proximity is an important part of the answer, but not the full picture. Significant indirect impacts of companies in most sectors exceed their direct impacts. ⁉️ Myth 4: “Nature Positive is all about regeneration!” ✅ Reality: Regenerating nature lost due to a company’s impacts on nature, as well as reducing the biodiversity footprint, are both valid ways for a company to become 'nature positive.'
