Federal agencies are making a concerted effort to ease the pathways into government careers. Tech to Gov Virtual Job Forums, with U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) at the helm, showcase the plethora of exciting projects and opportunities in government for job seeking technologists across the country. The Volcker Alliance is excited to share a new tool: the Gov-Ramps Aggregator, an open-source database of internships, fellowships, and other entry-level career opportunities local, state, and federal government. The resource currently includes almost 200 opportunities from all 50 states and can be filtered by location, application deadline, degree requirements, and more. This aggregator is a jumping-off point for jobseekers to explore nearby public service onramps and will continue to expand in the months ahead. Check it out! https://lnkd.in/eJqewb83

Amber D. Jackson, MPS Little Rock, AR She/Her Post 2/3  After my social work undergrad, I chose to attend the Clinton School of Public Service. I wanted to learn more about policy and how to make an impact on a larger level. After a fellowship and internship at the Arkansas Department of Human Services, I was starting to believe government could still create positive change. I felt it was critical to work inside the system to figure out how to change it. I took a job in higher education at a predominantly white institution that was establishing an Office of Diversity and Inclusion. I hit the jackpot with my boss there - she was incredible, and I learned so much. That experience led me to launch my own consulting business and then work for a nonprofit during the pandemic, focusing on collaborative problem-solving and dialogue. After my former boss was named Little Rock's first Chief Equity Officer, she called and asked me to join her team as program manager. For me, it was a perfect fit. I'm part of the “Xennial” micro-generation - we had an analog childhood but a digital adulthood. I have enough millennial in me to be driven by purpose, combined with an incredible work ethic my parents taught me. My work has to have meaning - it's part of my DNA. When asked what public service means to me, the first thing that comes to mind is “relentlessly pursuing justice.” That's what drives me every day in my role.

In repeated discussions with HR officials who have been struggling to fill positions in a tight workforce, many have pointed to the idea that there’s a wealth of available talent, when the need for a formal college credential has been dropped. In fact, over the last two years, more than 20 state governments have passed legislation or taken executive action on skills-first hiring practices, removing degree requirements and college degree screens from public-sector jobs. Still, despite these changes, public-sector hiring trends still tend to prioritize degrees. That’s why five states – Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut and Louisiana – joined forces to build upon this concept with a first-of-its-kind cohort led by the social enterprise Opportunity@Work. Dubbed “Transformers in the Public Sector” –this effort will “help state agencies break down barriers for workers who are Skilled Through Alternative Routes (STARs) rather than a bachelor’s degree.” The states will collaborate and receive targeted support over the next 12 months to refine and implement these efforts. In addition, the initiative, will also include technical assistance support provided by The Volcker Alliance.
