Dr. Rickman's latest piece on PA Times, "Leadership: Rank or Character?," explores what truly defines effective leadership. Is it the rank you hold or the character you embody? Read it here: https://lnkd.in/gvccuumK What do you think matters more—rank or character? Share your thoughts! #Leadership #PublicAdministration #CharacterMatters #PATimes

You can still join the fun! Apply now for Spring 2025.
Our 2nd MPA face-to-face class at the FW campus is in the books! You can accomplish a lot in a full day class… including dancing (well, I danced while they were laser-focused on being tested on the song😎). The song was a perfect illustration of how working without a clear strategy, facing an overload of information that comes too fast, with no logical organization or direction, and assuming everyone starts at the same knowledge level can be overwhelming, disengaging and set us up failure. Most importantly, it proves (once again) that Billy Joel is the 👑! So greatful these amazing public servants chose us to improve themselves as leaders! 💜Tarleton State University Department of Public Administration Kelly Ballard Chad Leavitt George Amen, BS, LP, CFE, FSCEO Danny Brewer Brent Brown Jennifer Brockway Jesse Hunter EVELYN CARVAJAL, CHRM Jeff Kirkpatrick Justin Lambert Scott Spencer

We're excited to announce our support for one of our outstanding MPA students, Linda Nathan, who is running for the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) National Council Student Representative position! Linda shares, "I am honored to seek your support as the Student Representative for ASPA’s National Council. With nearly 20 years of experience advocating for marginalized communities, particularly those with disabilities, I have consistently worked to ensure access to vital services and resources. My background as a military spouse, mother, and advocate has shaped my understanding of systemic challenges and inequities, driving my commitment to public service. As someone deeply invested in diversity, equity, and inclusion, I bring a unique perspective that emphasizes collaboration, mentorship, and empowerment. My experience spans addressing gaps in service, especially for underrepresented communities, and mentoring young professionals to help them succeed in their careers. If elected, I will continue to amplify diverse voices within ASPA and ensure that all members have access to the resources and opportunities they need to thrive. By supporting me, you’re voting for a representative who understands the importance of fostering an inclusive and equitable environment within ASPA and the communities we serve. Thank you for your consideration." If you're an ASPA member, we encourage you to consider voting for her in the upcoming election. Let's support emerging public administration leaders who are dedicated to creating positive change! https://lnkd.in/e6SmRMs3 #MPA #ASPA #PublicService #StudentRepresentative #Vote #TarletonStateUniversity

Congratulations to Chief LaPenna! We are proud to recognize MPA student Bobby LaPenna on being named the new Chief of Police for the City of Bedford, TX! With nearly 25 years of service, Bobby has risen through the ranks and shown tremendous leadership, serving as Interim Chief since June. We’re proud of your achievements, Bobby, and can’t wait to see the continued impact you'll have in Bedford! #TarletonProud #PublicAdministration #MPA #Leadership #TexanStrong #PublicService #BedfordPD #PoliceChief
The City of Bedford has selected Bobby LaPenna as the new Chief of Police. LaPenna has served as Interim Police Chief since June and previously held the role of Deputy Chief since 2021. “With nearly 25 years of dedicated service to the Bedford Police Department, Chief LaPenna brings a deep understanding of the department’s operations and culture, while also being a driving force behind its recent progress,” said Bedford Mayor Dan Cogan. “We are excited to see Bedford PD’s next chapter unfold under his leadership.” Chief LaPenna began his career with the Bedford Police Department in 2000 as a Detention Officer, steadily rising through the ranks and gaining experience in all facets of police work. “I am truly honored and humbled to serve as Chief of Police,” said LaPenna. “I look forward to continuing to work alongside the incredible men and women of the Bedford Police Department, who dedicate themselves every day to serving our community. While I grew up in Euless, Bedford has been my home for the past 24 years. The relationships I’ve built within the department and with our community fuel my passion for public service. This opportunity reflects the guidance and support of the mentors I’ve been fortunate to have, and I am deeply grateful for their influence in my life.” As his first steps as Chief, LaPenna will begin the search for a Deputy Chief to join the command staff, and he will focus on addressing the department’s structural needs and staffing levels to achieve its purpose and vision. “We couldn’t have found a more qualified candidate than Bobby LaPenna to lead our police department,” said Bedford City Manager Andrea Roy. “With a profound historical and operational knowledge of the city, he is a progressive, forward-thinking leader and a lifelong learner, always striving to improve. His transparency, accountability, and strong relationships with city staff make him the ideal choice to hit the ground running and continue fostering an inclusive, trustworthy, and equitable department.” Chief LaPenna also expressed his gratitude for the love and support of his family, especially his wife Katie and daughters Ruthie and Rebekah.

Today we kicked off our first MPA face-to-face class at the FW campus. 32!! yes, not a typo…32 incredible public servants from law enforcement, fire, public works, code enforcement, city admin, nonprofits, corrections, and more, took a day off work to become better negotiators. They studied, role-played, shamelessly sent each other to jail and threatened to break fingers (just watch the video 😉), but mostly they laughed, and I loved every second! To me, laughter is the best sound in a classroom because it means walls are down, minds are open, and real learning is happening without the pressure. So proud of our MPA Students!
