This Michigan-born fellow has never been intimated by the Midwestern climate. But the warmer weather here isn't why he and his partner selected Iowa, either. Watch the video for Dr. Sifuentes' why!

Katie Ries, MSW, LMSW, a social worker on the Supportive and Palliative Care team, is championing reform in Iowa’s guardianship laws to protect the rights of terminally ill patients. In her role, Ries has witnessed how the state’s legal requirements for court approval in end-of-life decisions create distress for families and delays in patient care. Through her work with patients, guardians, and lawmakers, Ries is advocating for legislative change to allow guardians to make timely decisions, hoping to align Iowa’s policies with those of most other states. How do you know which of the numbers on plastic bottles indicate they are actually recyclable? The Biomedical Sustainability Initiative at the University of Iowa, known among those in the know as the 6th Floor Greenteam, use the catchphrase, "1 and 2 in the blue" to promote getting the right items in the blue recycling bins around their lab. Led by Emma Stapleton Thornell, PhD, a research assistant professor in the division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Occupational Medicine, the team organically formed through shared interest in promoting collaborative sustainability in their shared lab spaces. They now send out a weekly newsletter with tips and tricks on small changes one may make to help save energy within the research spaces, among many other earth-conscious efforts. While the team's efforts to save energy has led to identifying cost savings for the University of Iowa, the data the team has collected reveals these efforts may also lead to less secondary pollution in the atmosphere, ultimately contributing to better health for Iowans everywhere.

My laboratory has an opening for a research associate. We study how different types of epithelial cells contribute to the movement of ions and how their contribution affects tissue-level physiology. A majority of our work focuses on cystic fibrosis. https://lnkd.in/dzF2ab95
