History, heritage, science, sports and progress: What do they have in common? October 30th 1974: My father was a student in medical school at the University of Kinshasa. Fast forward to yesterday that marked the 50th anniversary of the "Rumble in the Jungle", the legendary 1974 boxing match between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman held in Kinshasa, Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo). I remember stories of my parents telling me how the city was rallying behind Ali to the chants of "Ali Boma Ye"! "Ali, Kill him" (him=Foreman) in Lingala. At that time, Zaire -now DRC- and the United States were at much closer stages of development than they are today. However, over the past five decades, economic divergence, advances in infrastructure and technology, improvements in healthcare and education, and sustained political stability have propelled the U.S. far ahead of the DRC. Despite this growing gap, it’s not a signal of failure; rather, it highlights the potential for rapid progress - and the DRC is catching up! Just as global landscapes can shift within a few decades, so too can the future of the DRC and other nations on the African continent. With investment, innovation, and stability, there is hope for transformative change in a relatively short time. Our sponsorship of Twende Sports Nairobi City Thunder basketball team and KBF Premier League 2024 National Champions reflects and reinforces our belief that athletes and sports have a critical role to play in global transformation. They shine the spotlight and help the world relate to existing but hidden realities, just like the "Rumble in the Jungle shed the light on Zaïre (DR Congo) and Africa at the time for the world to see.
