Stephen Domingo and I were the very first on the ground when John Sampson called upon us at Winko Solar in 2023 to evaluate the feasability of Solar Powered Oxygen at the government hospital in Bo, Sierra Leone 🇸🇱 and deliver the early assessment. Proud to see the end result! More news about our initiative in Liberia 🇱🇷 soon!

I know that Direct Relief is Extremely focused on the fires in my home state of California right now, but I’m extremely grateful to Direct Relief and the Society of Critical Care Medicine for assisting addressing dire medical circumstances related to oxygen access and renewable energy in Africa over the past two years. Direct Relief, the SCCM, the G4 Alliance, the Institute of Global Perioperative Professionals, the American Society of Anesthesiologists Professional Diversity Committee, Diaspora African Forum and of course key professional contractors LifeCare Technology of Ghana, Barrow Construction of the Gambia, Winko Solar and Safe Surgical Initiatives have all been integral to the progress described in this excellent piece by Direct Relief. https://lnkd.in/ekFuf2BJ

NVIDIA just went over 3X, all while using 25 Watts of power. Why does it matter? NVIDIA’s most affordable generative AI super computer, th Jetson Nano Orin Super that performs 67 TOPS while redcuing the cost by 50%. And it’s here. 👾👾 For applications like AI at the edge, where devices often operate in power-constrained environments (e.g., solar-powered systems or remote locations), this allows higher performance without overhauling the power infrastructure. ⚡️ ⚡️Operating at 25 Watts —5 times the average power consumption of an active iPhone— combined with the low-cost advantage of open-source LLMs (Llama, Grok) and diffusion models, represents a transformative step toward sustainable AI computation in emerging markets like Africa, enabling energy-efficient and affordable deployment of advanced technologies in power-constrained and off-grid environments. ⚡️⚡️ With less than $500, you can harness the power of the sun and affordable edge computing devices to run your own offline small scale LLM, in even the most remote location At Winko Solar we welcome each step AI ventures off the grid, and into our infrastructure technology solutions. https://lnkd.in/gfiWHS6t

History, heritage, science, sports and progress: What do they have in common? October 30th 1974: My father was a student in medical school at the University of Kinshasa. Fast forward to yesterday that marked the 50th anniversary of the "Rumble in the Jungle", the legendary 1974 boxing match between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman held in Kinshasa, Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo). I remember stories of my parents telling me how the city was rallying behind Ali to the chants of "Ali Boma Ye"! "Ali, Kill him" (him=Foreman) in Lingala. At that time, Zaire -now DRC- and the United States were at much closer stages of development than they are today. However, over the past five decades, economic divergence, advances in infrastructure and technology, improvements in healthcare and education, and sustained political stability have propelled the U.S. far ahead of the DRC. Despite this growing gap, it’s not a signal of failure; rather, it highlights the potential for rapid progress - and the DRC is catching up! Just as global landscapes can shift within a few decades, so too can the future of the DRC and other nations on the African continent. With investment, innovation, and stability, there is hope for transformative change in a relatively short time. Our sponsorship of Twende Sports Nairobi City Thunder basketball team and KBF Premier League 2024 National Champions reflects and reinforces our belief that athletes and sports have a critical role to play in global transformation. They shine the spotlight and help the world relate to existing but hidden realities, just like the "Rumble in the Jungle shed the light on Zaïre (DR Congo) and Africa at the time for the world to see. Check or company's page Winko Solar to see how we tackle medical and energy infrastructure to propel emerging nations into the next era.

"One thing is sure, most of these startups will fail". I remember the quote at the end of the Financial Times article covering our Berkeley SkyDeck demo day W22 over 2 years ago for the first in-person demo day after the pandemic in the winter of 2022. Walking in the empty Zellerbach Hall and afterwards rehearsing my speech for Winko Solar. As I attended SkyDeck's demo day yesterday I couldn't help but reflect on the journey so far. We are all still here. And we have not failed. Congratulations to Berkeley SkyDeck Startups of Batch 18, I have seen your pitches and I was extremely impressed although, not surprised. Good luck!

  • Following a landmark groundbreaking ceremony earlier this week with representatives from Sinoe County, the highly anticipated construction has now advanced to the final phase of our Solar-Powered Oxygen installation in Greenville, Monrovia. We're kicking off with Step 1: implementing the drainage setup for the solar panel field, a crucial foundation for ensuring efficient and sustainable energy generation. This marks a significant stride forward in bringing clean, life-saving technology to the region. #RenewableEnergy #HealthcareInnovation #SustainableDevelopment
