On this International Day of Epidemic Preparedness, we reflect on the future of health and the vital role of women leaders in shaping it. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the need to invest in systems that prevent, detect, and respond to outbreaks. Rewinding to #WHS2024, the Lancet Commission’s Global Health 2050 report highlighted the importance of equitable health systems and robust epidemic preparedness to halve premature deaths by mid-century. Women, who make up 70% of the health workforce but hold less than 25% of leadership roles, must be central to these efforts. Amplifying their voices and leadership is essential to building resilient, inclusive health systems. 🌍🎓Women in Global Health was delighted to attend the launch of the WHO Academy in Lyon - a vital resource for the health workforce and a project we have supported wholeheartedly since its inception. We are enormously grateful to the Government of France and the WHO for inviting us - and we stand ready to contribute expertise from across our global movement of women health workers in support of a #WHOAcademy gender curriculum. Women make up 70% of the health workforce globally but only hold 25% of leadership roles. WGH's own gender transformative leadership and intersectionality curriculum equips women in health to own their space at the table and take up leadership, modeling new norms of leadership that leave gender inequity behind. This week, Dr. Elena Marbán Castro, Vice President of Women in Global Health Spain, represented Women in Global Health at the 2nd Annual WHO Meeting of the Minds on Quality of Care. Elena’s keynote on "Diversity as a Tool to Improve Quality of Care" delivered a clear message: 🔸 "Women make up 70% of the global health workforce but hold only 25% of leadership roles. Gender-diverse leadership leads to better outcomes, innovation, and equitable care." Elena also highlighted that only 14% of women health workers globally have access to properly fitting PPE, increasing risks and undermining dignity. 💜 Her call to action: "Equity must be deeply embedded in every decision and action."
