🧠 Ben’s Friday Psych Bite: Familiarity Bias Ever feel like you instinctively know how to use a new app without a tutorial? You’re not alone, Familiarity Bias is at play! People naturally gravitate toward experiences that feel familiar. When you switch between your five different streaming apps, notice how the layout and controls feel nearly identical? That’s no coincidence, Familiarity Bias ensures we prefer things that don’t require much mental effort to figure out. Consider this: Could you imagine a different icon for “Play”? Would progress bars work if they didn’t use a familiar, linear line? And would “Episodic Videos” be as easy to find as “TV Shows”? Probably not—because these patterns are ingrained in our minds through years of use. So how can you use this when designing your next product feature? 👉 Start by thinking about the task at hand. How have users completed this before? 👀 Look beyond apps, how is this task done in everyday life? ▶️ Are there universal symbols or processes tied to this task?
