It's always felt good to be in an aesthetically-pleasing mass timber building, and as building codes change, architects and engineers are seeking to expand the use of mass timber to enjoy all of its benefits. We liked this article from CoStar "Mass Timber Buildings May Provide a Benefit Beyond Sustainability: Earthquake Resistance" that examines how a study at University of California, San Diego has shown how mass timber structures are faring as well as traditional construction in earthquakes. Want to join the mass timber movement: Contact Scott Charney to discuss your project. https://lnkd.in/erq4Cy46

It's finally here! We know that one of the biggest obstacles for reusing historic buildings is complying with modern building code. But we also know that there are usually creative ways to make code work better for a historic project than is commonly understood or practiced. The National Park Service has just released their long-awaited Preservation Brief 51: "Building Codes for Historic and Existing Buildings: Planning and Maximizing their Application." This Brief dives into the options and considerations for applying code to historic buildings. https://lnkd.in/g-4A-j-7 Stay tuned for our simplified version of this guide sometime soon! #UtahSHPO #HistoricPreservation #BuildingCodes #PreservationBrief #HistoricBuildings

Simple but quite effective method to calculate the cooling effect of trees! The combination of LandsDesign and Ladybug Tools for Grasshopper can help planners and landscape architects to better define vegetation in urban spaces. Moreover, the video shows how to calculate the solar radiation that a tree receives, based on its location, period of time and by considering its surrounding geometries.

Creating rain gardens in our urban and suburban landscapes is one way we can reduce surface flooding in our cities, towns and schools. When SuDS and green infrastracture is integrated into the early masterplanning stages of a project, costs can remain neutral. By integrating the skillsets of landscape architects and water engineers from the beginning, beautiful things can happen! Read our case study on our project Liverpool Rain Garden which illustrates the benefits of water management in urban centres: https://lnkd.in/eN2a_hKS
