New guidance alert! BRIEF 51: BUILDING CODES FOR HISTORIC AND EXISTING BUILDINGS discusses how to meet the goals of building codes while preserving or minimizing alterations to the character-defining features, spaces, materials, and finishes of historic buildings; provides guidance for selecting the optimal code compliance method and suggests best practices for achieving code-compliant solutions that also allow for the preservation of a building’s historic character.

A new paper: Pruijt, H. (2024) Urban squatting and the mobilizing effect of empty buildings. Routledge Handbook of Architecture, Urban Space and Politics, Vol II, Ecology, Social Participation and Marginalities, edited by Nikolina Bobic, Farzaneh Haghighi, 109-125, DOI: 10.4324/9781003112471-8 The idea was to explore how empty buildings invite squatting and provide inspiration. A takeaway is that it seems to matter whether, to the squatters, the building’s future seems closed-ended or open-ended. In the latter case, long-term investments are possible, and the squatting action can develop into a powerful protest against real estate speculation, a housing shortage or demolition plans. It's always felt good to be in an aesthetically-pleasing mass timber building, and as building codes change, architects and engineers are seeking to expand the use of mass timber to enjoy all of its benefits. We liked this article from CoStar "Mass Timber Buildings May Provide a Benefit Beyond Sustainability: Earthquake Resistance" that examines how a study at University of California, San Diego has shown how mass timber structures are faring as well as traditional construction in earthquakes.
