In September ’22 we went to Nairobi to deliver a 4-day programme of capacitation workshops with creative hubs from across Africa, providing training focused on climate-related policy education, community participation and an arts & media up-skilling programme - the hubs went on to exhibit their creative responses to climate change at COP27. It was hectic, special, unforgettable, intense, but most of all - a huge learning curve! We were lucky enough to be able to head to Mombasa afterwards to catch our breath and whilst there we gave our first major international delivery some thought. Top learnings: - Always have a Plan B if you’re working somewhere you’ve never worked before. Do you have a local fixer on the ground - like if your venue (nearly) falls through at the last minute… - If you’re working with vulnerable communities, make agreements that ensure those communities are remunerated in the way THEY say is most valuable. - There are potential collaborators EVERYWHERE. Seek out those with shared values & make that international project happen. - Are there any local issues that might affect what you’re doing? Elections? Power supply? Accessibility? - Don’t rely on social media to communicate: get emails and phone numbers that work 24/7. - One for wherever you’re delivering: big isn’t always better. Global organisations are great, but weigh up if they’ll give you the insight you really need for the area you're in. I had the incredible opportunity to attend ACS@ONE, an event hosted by Jacobs Ladder Africa, where we delved into the groundbreaking outcomes of the ACS 2023 Nairobi Declaration. The focus was clear: How can we build on the momentum of ACS 2023 to accelerate progress toward a sustainable and resilient Kenya—and by extension, Africa? On Day 2, the discussions turned to youth and children inclusion in climate change conversations. 🌱 As the custodians of the future, it’s crucial that we, the younger generation, take an active role in shaping the policies and actions that will define our world. We explored how advocacy and strategic policy engagement can keep governments and stakeholders aligned with climate goals. Africa's vast natural resources hold immense potential, but challenges like ineffective governance and inadequate youth participation, threaten sustainability. At the African Youth Conference on Natural Resources and Environmental Governance (#AYC2024), Chibeze Ezekiel, rallied young Africans to champion responsible resource management and climate action. His organization, Strategic Youth Network for Development : SYND GHANA, empowers young people through initiatives like the Youth-NREG platform. Nigeria’s government recognizes the pivotal role youth are playing in shaping the country’s future by supporting the implementation of Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) and Long-Term Low-Emission Development Strategies (LT-LEDS). During the 2024 World Environment Day, World Resources Institute and GreenHubAfrica Foundation, in collaboration with the Youth Leadership Steering Committee (YSC), held a panel discussion on key environmental themes and the role of youth in Nigeria’s future planning. Building on these discussions, WRI is developing youth trainings on NDC & LT-LEDS priority areas to empower Nigeria's youth. These trainings are aimed at enhancing the knowledge and skills of youth climate champions on climate issues and sustainable practices. Modules will include trainings on climate negotiations and policy analysis, grant writing and climate finance tracking, energy access and just transition, green entrepreneurship, and climate change and health. Emmanuel Ola-Olowoyo, an influential figure in Sustainable Development Practice and the Network Coordinator of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network - Nigeria, is a pivotal leader in propelling the nation towards fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals.   Mr. Emmanuel Ola-Olowoyo was the ideal candidate to enlighten our #ecocordinators on the imperative need to revolutionize the approach to teaching climate change and sustainability in classrooms and communities. Africa doesn’t have to choose between economic growth and protecting the environment. Resources can be extracted with minimal environmental damage to provide the necessary equipment for the green transition, significantly boosting economic growth. I am very excited to have completed this course on sustainable consumption and production in Africa offered by the UN Environment Programme, United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) European Union. The SPC course in Africa with UNITAR is important for me as it offers a holistic and relevant education, aligns with global sustainability efforts, enhances my professional prospects, and fosters my personal and ethical growth. In addition, fostering sustainable consumption and production in Africa is a holistic approach that addresses environmental, social, and economic challenges while contributing to the continent's overall well-being and resilience. It requires collaboration among governments, businesses, civil society, and individuals to create a sustainable and inclusive future for Africa. Environmental Justice and Climate Change Policies for Developing Green Economy for Africa's Growth and Sustainability can be a game changer in Africa. Climate change has placed a huge extra burden on the development of an already disadvantaged continent and its people. Climate change affects the whole world and can only be addressed successfully by transforming the global development agenda – economic, social and environment– with the active participation of all countries and people in the world. Investment for green growth needs to be scaled-up significantly–Green Economy's growth therefore means fostering growth and development while preserving natural assets, and ensuring that they continue to provide the resources and environmental services on which our well-being relies. Youthup Global Advocacy Workshop 2024 is intended to contribute to this effort to raise awareness and nurture the discussion on sustainable development paths for Africa like the green economy in the face of a changing climate.
