Today, our thoughts are with the resilient people of #Ukraine, who have endured unimaginable hardships after the full-scale invasion two years ago. With 40% of the population needing humanitarian support, they must not be forgotten. Every day, Airlink works to move aid supplies and humanitarian personnel for our partners whose programs continue on the ground. We've helped 66 nonprofits and NGOs respond in Ukraine and neighboring countries, reaching over 5 million people with aid and assistance. Having recently surveyed these partners, healthcare remains the top programmatic focus, with funding scarcity and supply chain costs presenting significant challenges. This underscores our role of providing free airlift and logistical solutions for timely aid movement without barriers to response. On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a military invasion of Ukraine. The active conflict continues two years on, with 3.67 million Ukrainians displaced internally and 5.97 million Ukrainians displaced across Europe. Significant multi-sector needs are expected to continue for families on the frontline and internally displaced persons (IDPs) throughout 2024. In August 2022, CORE conducted an assessment of IDP shelter preferences in Lvivska Oblast to inform the design of its rental assistance program in Ukraine, which found that half of surveyed IDPs wished to secure private housing, but faced significant financial barriers to doing so. This learning brief focuses on lessons drawn from CORE’s Ukraine Humanitarian Fund (UHF)-supported rental assistance program to 300 households, which was implemented from December 2022 to August 2023 in Lviv and Lvivska oblast, and includes recommendations for scaling in this context in 2024. 🌍 Another Effort to Reach the Famine-Stricken Zamzam IDPs Camp 🌍 We are making another determined attempt to deliver in-kind food assistance to the Zamzam IDPs camp in Sudan via the Adre border. Since the conflict began, our WFP trucks have faced significant access challenges in reaching this famine-stricken location. As the IDM team, we have put all necessary assurances in place to ensure that we are reaching the right people. This ongoing effort highlights the critical importance of keeping all borders open to ensure that humanitarian aid can reach those in desperate need. Our mission remains steadfast: to deliver life-saving assistance to the most vulnerable. Let’s continue to advocate for open borders and seamless access to all affected areas. As we mark “International Charity Day," the whole world is awakened to our common responsibility to help those less fortunate and in doing this establish an unbreakable spirit of global solidarity. In May 2020, during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, various international communities moved to help the world by shipping out much-needed supplies and medical relief. 2020 passed into the record books as a year when foreign aid reached new heights, at $161.2 billion. Most of this foreign assistance came from donor countries like the United States, Germany, the United Arab Emirates and France. The United Arab Emirates, where it first achieved control over part of its COVID pandemic, then went on to help other countries. Since establishment of nation in 1971, the United Arab Emirates has given more than AED360 billion ($98 billion) in foreign aid--a firm testament to its capacity to change lives positively and help those who are in distress around the world. We can create a community that protects the rights of disaster affected populations to access the support they need. I joined the international humanitarian assistance community over two decades ago. As an insider I know and note with concrete examples and fact that it has ceased to be about affected populations and more of institutional survival at the expense of affected populations. My goal and commitment is to invest my role to bringing international humanitarian assistance to populations affected by human made and natural disasters. We need an international humanitarian system that delivers to affected populations. I am asking for my community on LinkedIn to join me. We can create a community that protects the rights of disaster affected populations, and ensure access to the support they need. We can make international humanitarian action work for those who need it. We need international humanitarian action, assistance and aid that is accountable. We need an international humanitarian aid and assistance that has integrity! We can do it!
