🌍🔬 Wrapping up an incredible internship! 🌊🧪 Over the span of two months, I've had the privilege of completing my internship at the Department of Geoscience at Aarhus University under the guidance of Christof Pearce. During this time, I worked on a fascinating research project analyzing sediment varves from Aarhus Bay to uncover annual climate patterns from the past. 🏞️ 📍 What I achieved: Core Sampling & Analysis: Collected and studied sediment cores to understand how these layers can act as natural climate archives. Grain Size Analysis: Utilized advanced techniques like laser diffraction to differentiate sediment types and understand seasonal deposition cycles. Microscopy & Diatom Studies: Identified diatom species under the microscope, which provided key insights into past marine conditions. Data Interpretation: Combined radiocarbon dating and image processing to build a timeline of over 200 years of sedimentation, helping to reveal Aarhus Bay's climate history. This project has not only enhanced my skills in marine sedimentology and data analysis, but also deepened my understanding of how we can use natural archives to study climate change. 🌍🌡️ A huge thank you to Christof Pearce for his mentorship and the Department of Geoscience at Aarhus University for this amazing opportunity! Two U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (#SULI) program interns at Berkeley Lab are working with Daniel Feldman, lead scientist of the Surface Atmosphere Integrated Field Laboratory (#ARMSAIL) field campaign, to study #ARMdata. Hear from one of those interns, Felix Yu, University of Michigan, who is developing machine-learning methods to estimate surface albedo across the SAIL study area by downscaling geostationary and polar-orbiting satellite instrument datasets. #DOEClimateScience #ClimateScience

I’m excited to share that I have successfully completed my APR.Intern project APR.Intern titled "Development and Implementation of the DEBOT Global Tidal Model." with Tidetech. → This project focused on improving global tidal predictions by developing and refining the DEBOT global tidal model. We tested its performance against observed tidal data and optimized it for generating accurate tidal boundary conditions for coastal ocean modelling. → Initial simulations using coarse resolutions (1° and 1/2°) struggled to capture the complexities of tidal dynamics in regions, like the Irish Sea. However, optimizing the model with higher resolutions (1/4° and 1/6°) led to more accurate results, though interestingly, 1/6° did not outperform 1/4°, indicating that increased resolution alone doesn't guarantee better performance. → A key improvement of further study was the adjustment of model parameters, such as allowing eddy viscosity coefficient (A_h) to vary with depth, which enhanced the model’s accuracy. Future research could explore even higher resolutions (1/12° and 1/24°) to further refine coastal tidal simulations. This internship has been an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience tackling real-world challenges, specifically through developing robust tidal simulation for coastal ocean modelling. 🌟 Thrilled to Share My Latest Summer Research Adventure! 🌟 🔍 Internship Details: Completed a summer research internship under Dr. Soumyajit Mukherjee, Prof. Department of Earth Sciences, IIT Bombay (July-August). 🚗 Research Focus: Explored the transition from conventional fossil fuel vehicles to electric and hybrid options. Analyzed key government policies, including the Automotive Mission Plan (#AMP) and #FAME (#Phase-I &II) initiatives, assessing their effectiveness in promoting electric & Hybrid Electric vehicle adoption. 🌍 Relevance to Geophysics: While not traditional Geology or Geophysics, this research is crucial for us as geophysicists. Understanding energy transitions informs our approach to resource management and environmental stewardship. 🤝 Industry Perspective: This research aims to explore how diverse energy sources can coexist, rather than oppose the oil and gas industry. I have recently completed a summer internship "Analytical vs Numerical Solutions in Magnetohydrodynamics" at the Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Centrum Astronomiczne im. Mikołaja Kopernika PAN (NCAC PAS)). I worked on implementation of numerical algorithms for convection dominated transport of fluids. This problem is notoriously difficult to treat numerically due to discontinuities that frequently appear in the solutions (e.g. bow-shocks in case of interaction between stellar wind and planetary magnetospheres). Linear schemes are unable to properly resolve these discontinuities, which requires one to use more sophisticated algorithms to get an accurate approximation.

🚀 Excited to share my recent internship project on "Development of an ML based algorithm for the retrieval of ocean surface winds from L-band SAR on-board the forthcoming NISAR mission"! During my internship at Space Applications Centre, ISRO , I had the incredible opportunity to work on a fascinating project aimed at developing a machine learning algorithm to estimate ocean surface wind parameters from L-band SAR data. 🔍 Project Overview: -Objective: To develop a robust algorithm for estimating wind speed and direction using L-band SAR data, with a focus on the forthcoming NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) mission. -Methodology: Leveraging machine learning techniques, including Random Forest Regressor, and integrating the Geophysical Model Function (GMF) to establish the theoretical framework. -Results: Achieved promising results with low error metrics and demonstrated the algorithm's accuracy in estimating wind parameters. 🌟 Key Learnings: -Gained insights into SAR data processing and analysis techniques. -Enhanced proficiency in machine learning algorithms and model development. -Understood the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing complex environmental challenges. I'm grateful for the valuable learning experience and mentorship provided throughout this internship. 🌟 Exciting News! 🌟 I am thrilled to announce that I have successfully completed my 2-week In-plant training at the ISRO Propulsion Complex (IPRC)! 🚀 During this incredible journey, I had the opportunity to work alongside some of the brightest minds in the field of propulsion technology and space research. My training focused on the VIKAS engine, cryogenic and semi-cryogenic engines, various test stand facilities, liquid hydrogen production, various components in metrology, non-destructive testing apparatus, and safety and fire services. This allowed me to gain knowledge and deepen my understanding of the functions and applications of rocket components and parts. Some key takeaways from my training include: 🚀Understanding the intricacies of the VIKAS engine, including its design, assembly, and testing processes. 🚀Gaining insights into cryogenic and semi-cryogenic propulsion systems and their significance in space missions. 🚀Learning about the production and handling of liquid hydrogen, a critical component in cryogenic engines. 🚀Familiarizing myself with advanced metrology techniques used to ensure the precision and reliability of rocket components. 🚀Exploring various non-destructive testing methods to evaluate the integrity of materials and components without causing damage. 🚀Observing and understanding the importance of safety and fire services protocols in a high-risk environment. I also had the opportunity to explore various test facilities at IPRC, which include: 1.Engine Test Stands: Used for the static testing of liquid propulsion engines, providing valuable data on performance and reliability(MET,PTS,ATS,RCS) 2.Cryogenic Test Facilities: Specialized in testing engines and components that operate at extremely low temperatures, crucial for missions involving cryogenic fuels. 3.High Altitude Test Facilities: Simulate high-altitude conditions to test engine performance and reliability in space-like environments. A huge thank you to my mentors and colleagues at IPRC for their guidance and support throughout this internship. This experience has been truly transformative, and I am grateful for the knowledge and skills I have acquired. I am excited to apply what I have learned and continue my journey in the field of space research and propulsion technology.
