I was talking to someone recently who is about to return to work after a break. She is questioning if she really wants to return to this particular job, as she feels it is a career she has fallen into rather than deliberately chosen. She is approaching mid-life and wants to be doing something she is passionate about. She's not alone! Many women feel stuck and unsatisfied in their careers. It's a sign you are ready for growth and new challenges! Change, especially careers, can be daunting but also deeply rewarding! As Confucius said, "Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life." So here are some things I find help navigate this transition with confidence and purpose: 📋 SELF ASSESSMENT - the most important step...start by understanding yourself! What are your core values, interests, strengths, skills? What aspect of your current role gives you energy, makes you buzz! For me in my previous career as a Commercial Leader, it was helping people grow, develop and smash their performance! What type of environment do you thrive in? Have you done a personality test, career or strengths finder assessment? These can help you paint a picture of your preferred career path or even new business! 🤝 RESEARCH & NETWORK - once you have a sense of direction, research industries/roles that align with your interests and skills. Reach out to people on LinkedIn/at networking events or friends/friends of friends! These can offer invaluable insights, advice and even job leads. 🤹 BUILD NEW SKILLS - identify your skills gap. Look at courses, workshops (Linkedin learning is also a good place to start) or certifications that can bridge gaps. Learning is a continuous journey and nowadays there are plenty of options 'on and offline'. Remember you are never too old! 🙋♀️GET A COACH - now of course I am going to add this, as I am a Coach! I will also add this is my biggest regret, I waited too long to get the help and support I needed. When I did get coached the 'light bulb' moments kept coming and the path forward became clear! Change is never easy, but when we take the first step and get some help, that's when our path unfolds in exciting and unexpected ways! Have you successfully navigated a career change, or are you considering one? What have you found most valuable or where are you stuck? Share your experience, or questions in the comments below...and reach out if you want some help! #Navigatingchange #coachingtips #careerchange #newbeginnings #lovewhatyoudo #midlifemastery #maximisingpotential

“You’re so brave for changing careers” This is the #1 reaction I get when people find out I made a mid-career shift from corporate marketing to starting my own coaching and gym business. I appreciate their kind words, but unfortunately, it’s not true. I was actually 💩 scared the whole time!!! You would be crazy not to be freaking out at the thought of risking the career you’ve built for so many years for something completely new and untested. So I wasn’t brave at all. Instead, I was prepared. I spent a lot of time and effort figuring out ways to lessen the risk so it didn’t feel so scary. Here’s some of the things I did that helped: 💩 Plan a sufficient transition period: I offered to my company to stay on for 6 months on a part time basis, instead of the mandatory 3 months. This gave me a longer lead time to get my business up and running while still having cash coming in. 💩 Prepare a financial safety net: You know the idea of the “rainy day fund” where you should have 3-6 months savings at all times? Do the same for your transition. And if you’re extra paranoid like me, prepare 2x or even 3x that amount! 💩 Get your dream team in place: Set yourself up for success by making sure you have the right people to support your journey. Believe me, it lessens the burden when you know you don’t have to figure it all out yourself! For me that meant, hiring a business coach, a career coach, getting partners, and of course, leaning on friends and family for much needed emotional support along the way. 💩 Fix your fitness first: You won’t last long if you’re exhausted, burnt out, and have low resilience for stress. Prioritise your health and fitness first (physical and mental!) and that will give you a solid base from which to start. 💩 Hold on to your “Big Why”: Even after doing all of these things, there will still be rough days when you wonder why you left your cushy job for this. It’s at this point that you need to hold on to your “Big Why”. It will give you the focus to live to fight another day. So if you’ve always wanted to make a career change but are 💩 scared, don’t worry, it’s normal. Focus instead on preparing to deal with the 💩 along the way! Need help with your preparations? For many, it’s a time to consider making meaningful changes to align their work with their aspirations. Reflection is the cornerstone of any significant career decision. Whatever the reason, a new year symbolizes a chance to reset and reimagine your future. Change can be daunting, but the fear of the unknown shouldn’t hold you back. The best way to overcome hesitation is to start small. Begin by researching potential industries or roles, reaching out to mentors or professionals in fields of interest, and identifying the skills you may need to transition successfully. By breaking the process into manageable steps, you build confidence and momentum toward your goals. As you look toward 2025, focus on setting clear, actionable objectives for your career journey. Has a belief you’ve held stopped your career promotion? Have you ever stopped to consider how your beliefs might be shaping your career trajectory? Like many of us, you may have inherited beliefs from childhood or absorbed them from influential figures in your life without even realising it. Think back to a belief you held as a child – perhaps it was the notion that you should be “seen and not heard” or that work is a “means to an end”. For years, it may have influenced your behaviour, causing you to hold back and not speak up in certain situations and to “put up and shut up”. In your career, many beliefs may hold you back from reaching your full potential. These beliefs often manifest as feelings of inadequacy, fear of failure or a reluctance to take risks. They can leave you feeling stuck in a cycle of self-doubt and limitation. Because work is meant to be serious, right? We spend so much time at work – it is imperative to enjoy what you do. Imagine living a life of power and limitlessness, where you approach challenges with confidence and joy. It’s possible to challenge and dispel limiting beliefs, freeing yourself to pursue your goals and aspirations with renewed vigour. I recall a moment during a 5-year international project when I boldly challenged the belief that work is meant to be (hard) work, when I declared to other members of the management team that we were there to have fun. Wow – that caused a reaction. My insistence on infusing joy into our work environment gradually shifted the team’s perspectives. By the project’s end, the “having fun” mantra had become ingrained in our collective ethos, leading to increased productivity and morale. So, how can you break free from limiting beliefs and propel your career forward? 1. Evaluate your beliefs. Take a moment to reflect on the beliefs that may be holding you back. Are they serving or hindering your progress? 2. Identify external influences. Consider whether you’ve adopted beliefs from parents, friends, or partners that may not align with your true aspirations. 3. Reframe your mindset. Challenge negative beliefs and reframe them in a way that empowers and supports your career goals. Don’t let limiting beliefs dictate the course of your career. You have the power to rewrite your story and pursue the success you deserve. If you’re feeling trapped in a cycle of self-limiting beliefs and stagnant career growth, I invite you to break free. Let’s work together to dissolve those beliefs that are holding you back and pave the way for your next-level promotion. 🚀 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐔𝐧𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐲 𝐚𝐭 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤? 𝐃𝐨 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐉𝐨𝐛 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧? 👩💼 Many professionals express unhappiness at work but feel trapped due to commitments, challenging bosses, or stressful environments. They're often unclear if they need a job change, a new boss, or a new career. This confusion is common, especially when many continue working without loving them. Jeff Bezos's Regret Minimization Framework can help gain clarity. 🔄 Understanding the Regret Minimization Framework The principle is simple: imagine yourself at 80 and minimize your regrets when reflecting on your life. Here’s how to apply it to your career decisions: 🔸Project to Age 80: Picture yourself at 80. Reflect on your current job situation from this future perspective. 🔸Identify Potential Regrets: Consider the regrets you might have if you don’t make changes. Are you missing out on happiness, growth, or fulfilment? 🔸Make Decisions to Minimize Regrets: Choose the path that will leave you with the fewest regrets when you look back on your life. 🌟 Navigating the Confusion: Job Transition vs. Career Transition 😕 Common Confusions: 🔸Dissatisfaction with the Boss: Is it the work you dislike or the management? 🔸Stressful Environment: Would a different company culture alleviate your stress? 🔸Lack of Passion: Is the work not aligning with your natural abilities and interests? 🛡 Using the Framework to Decide: ❓ Job Transition: Questions to Ask: 🔅 Will I regret not exploring new roles within my current industry? 🔅Could a different company or role provide a better environment or management? 🔅Am I seeking better growth opportunities or work-life balance? 🤘 Strategy: 🔸Research: Look for new roles in your field that align better with your goals. 🔸Network: Connect with professionals and mentors within your industry. 🔸Skill Enhancement: Focus on refining skills relevant to similar roles. 🔸Resume Update: Highlight your experience and achievements in your current field. ❓ Career Transition: Questions to Ask: 🔅Will I regret not pursuing a passion in a different field? 🔅Am I excited about the potential to learn new skills and take on new challenges? 🔅Will a new career bring more personal fulfilment and happiness? 🤘Strategy: 🔸Education and Training: Invest in learning new skills relevant to your desired career. 🔸Exploration: Research new industries and understand the opportunities. 🔸Mentorship: Seek advice from those who have successfully transitioned to new careers. 🔸Resume Revamp: Emphasize transferable skills and highlight experiences that demonstrate your adaptability and passion for the new field. 🌱 Embrace the Future with Confidence 👋 As someone who has gone through this process and reinvented my career, I can help you identify your true calling. You don’t have to stay in a job that doesn’t help you grow.... ...or doesn't let you learn… …or be the person you want to be. (What if the best career move is to move on?) You say: “Been here for 15 years. Don’t want to throw that all away.” “Maybe if I stay a bit longer, I’ll finally get that promotion.” “I’m so overworked, but maybe things will improve.” But before you know it... You’re still there. NOTHING has improved. The promotion hasn’t come. You’re not learning anything new. That training that was promised didn’t happen. It's an economics principle: 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗸 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗙𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗰𝘆. It’s our tendency to continue where we are... Even if jumping ship would be more beneficial. And it also applies to our careers. I’ve coached many people on this. Because I was once in this position. I too stayed too long in a wonderful company. In the early years, I was growing. Moving to different countries. Enjoying my expat life. Doing country to big regional roles. But eventually, that amazing career growth stopped. I wasn’t fulfilled. I stopped learning anything new. So I thought hard and made a brave decision... I left the company I loved after more than 25 years. I decided to get my promotion elsewhere. And it felt so liberating. Redefining the new Me. Learning another industry. Feeling invigorated in a different culture. Feeling energised to be in a new environment. Honored to work with wonderful and competent people. So once you start feeling stuck, or start stagnating…. 𝗧𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. They are the same ones I ask people that I coach: 1. What are your values and can you still live them where you currently work? 2. What is your career goal? Can you achieve it in XXX time in your current company? Is that okay with you? 3. How would your life change if you moved to another company? What’s the good and bad? What are you willing to put up with? 4. What are you afraid of? Are there ways to know more about these? How would you get around the bad? 5. Fast forward 1 year from now. How would you feel if you’re still here doing the same thing? 6. What’s the worst thing that could happen if you left your company? Change is terrifying. Especially if you’ve been where you are for a long time. Especially if you feel cozy and comfortable. But remember, 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗮 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲... From something that could be better. Growth, learning, an adventure might just be around the corner…. If you take that risk, in a calculated way. P.S. If you are feeling stuck and afraid to make a move, contact me and let's see if I'm the right person to help you. --------------------------------------- Hi! I'm Rocky Esguerra. Thinking about quitting your job and doing something different can be fun and exciting. But taking action can be scary. Overcoming this fear is crucial to finding a career that truly fulfils you. Here’s how you can break free from fear and take the leap towards your dream career: 1️⃣ Knowing your fears: The first step is to pinpoint what exactly you’re afraid of. Is it the fear of failure? Fear of the unknown? Or perhaps the fear of financial instability? Identifying your fears can help you address them more effectively. 2️⃣ Reframing your mindset: Shift your perspective on fear. Instead of seeing it as a barrier, view it as a sign that you’re stepping out of your comfort zone and growing. Embrace the discomfort as a necessary part of the journey. 3️⃣ Break It Down: Large changes can seem overwhelming. Break down your career transition into smaller, manageable steps. Focus on one step at a time, and celebrate small wins along the way. 4️⃣ Seek Support: Surround yourself with a supportive network of friends, family, or mentors. Share your fears and goals with them. Their encouragement can boost your confidence and help you stay motivated. 5️⃣ Level Up your Skills: Equip yourself with information about your desired career. Research the industry, required skills, and potential challenges. The more you know, the less daunting the transition will feel. 6️⃣ Create a Safety Net: If financial stability is a major concern, create a financial safety net before making the leap. Save up a cushion of funds to support yourself during the transition period. 7️⃣ Visualise Success: Visualisation can be a powerful tool. Imagine yourself succeeding in your new career. Visualising positive outcomes can reduce anxiety and increase your confidence. 8️⃣ Take Action: Fear often diminishes once you take action. Start with small steps towards your new career. The momentum you build will help you overcome fear and gain confidence. Every successful career change starts with overcoming fear. It’s natural to feel scared, but don’t let fear hold you back from pursuing a career that brings you joy and fulfilment.
