It will bring together leading cities and experts to explore the role of sustainable transportation in achieving NetZero goals 🌿. The session will feature cities such as Utsunomiya (Japan), which recently completed a NetZero LRT system 🚋, and Grenoble-Alpes Métropole (France) 🇫🇷, a leader in reimagining its transportation network as part of a broader sustainability initiative 🚉. The Smart City Expo World Congress 2024 in Barcelona showcased innovative solutions worldwide to make urban environments more resilient and efficient. There was a consensus among participants that their efforts to combat climate change and improve urban livability would continue regardless of the nature of the political leadership. 58% of the world's population lives in cities, about 4.7 billion people. Lauren Sorkin, Co-founder and Executive Director of the Resilient Cities Network, highlighted four critical dimensions for cities to enhance their resilience: 1. **Health and Wellbeing:** Assessing the city's and its residents' health. 2. **Economy and Society:** Evaluating job availability and the desire to attract diverse industries. 3. **Environment and Ecosystems:** Understanding the city's unique geographical and environmental challenges and opportunities. 4. **Leadership and Governance:** Strong leadership is essential to navigate urban challenges. Sorkin defined resilience as a city's capacity to recover from shocks like climate disasters or pandemics, highlighting the role of a Chief Resilience Officer. She also addressed eco-urbanism, which uses nature-based solutions for climate change and flooding.
