By replacing conventional fossil products with bio-based alternatives, these technologies can offer sustainability advantages, such as reduced climate change and toxicity impacts. However, the life cycle assessment (LCA) of bio-based technologies is challenging, and a comparison with fossil counterparts is often not straightforward. This session will explore recent advancements in LCA of emerging bio-based systems (BbS), focusing on key areas: a) Tools and methods for scaling-up of technology maturity. b) Tools and methods for integration of future socioeconomic scenarios, including the use of Integrated Assessment Models, but not limited to it. c) Tools and methods for impact assessment, including dynamic and prospective inventories, biogenic carbon accounting, and emerging pollutants. d) Tools and methods addressing multifunctionality and comparability with fossil-based products.   We encourage submissions that integrate multiple challenges and those focused on prospective inventory and impact LCA. How close are we to close the #WasteWater carbon cycle? We will find out tomorrow during our annual in-person meeting this time in Hürth! In WaterProof #CO2 emissions from waste(water) treatment are captured and transformed into formic acid via electrochemistry. This renewable acid can be used instead of a fossil-based chemical for the production of consumer goods and acidic deep eutectic solvents. You find this confusing? 🗽 Excited to share that our latest research paper, "Development and detailed investigation of metal nanoparticles decorated carbon black/sodium alginate composite beads for catalytic reduction of environmental toxicants and hydrogen production", has been published in the International Journal of Biological Macromolecules, IF= 7.7! 🌍⚗️ In this work, we explored innovative approaches to tackle environmental challenges and contribute to sustainable energy solutions. Here are the highlights: 🔬 Key Findings: We developed M⁰@Alg-OrP-BDs catalysts as efficient solutions for reducing environmental pollutants and generating hydrogen (H2) gas. Cu⁰@Alg-OrP-BDs exhibited remarkable catalytic activity, with its superior performance validated through detailed analysis. The GC-TCD system confirmed high purity of the produced H2 gas, highlighting the catalyst's potential for clean energy applications 🌍⚡. The #HorizonEU #WaterProofProject was concisely explained by the gorgous Pegah Shakeri, PhD in her talk at #2024CCU where she, besides others, elaborated on the electrodes used for CO2-conversion in WaterProof's innovative electrochemical process. You can still find her at the booth by Coatema Coating Machinery GmbH at the end of day two of the CO2-based fuels and chemicals conference! WaterProof aims at closing the waste(water) carbon loop by creating a novel biorefinery concept converting CO2 emissions from urban waste treatment facilities into valuable green consumer-products. The objective is a technology resulting in a GHG reduction based on CO2 utilization, replacement of fossil feedstock and industrial electrification.
