The Social Security Administration (SSA) has some recent updates to help improve how to interact with their services. - New Ways to Attend Hearings (Effective November 23, 2024) If you have a hearing with an administrative law judge, there are now four ways to attend: by phone (audio), by online video, by agency video or in person. These options give you more flexibility in how you participate in your hearing. - Appointments Required for Field Office Visits (Starting January 6, 2025) To visit a Social Security office for help, including getting a Social Security card, you’ll need to schedule an appointment in advance. Many services can be done online or through the automated National 800 Number (1-800-772-1213). If you can’t use these options, call your local office or the 800 number to make an appointment. We conducted a rapid evidence review on the seldom-heard groups at particular risk of marginalisation from the Scottish social security system. The evidence will support The Scottish Government Benefit Take-up Strategy by helping develop new approaches to support access. We found psychological barriers to claiming benefits include stigma and prejudice, and learning barriers include complex eligibility rules and inaccessible information. Take-up improvement approaches with evidence of effectiveness include culturally aware and targeted support services with long-term funding and joined-up approaches such as data sharing between government departments. The Social Security Administration (SSA) approves or denies SSI/SSDI, in part, by deciding if the applicant can still do past work. This past June, SSA cut the relevant work period from 15 to 5 years. In the video below, Justice in Aging's Trinh Phan and Jennifer Cronenberg outline the significance of these changes.
